I can see us getting another year out of him if I am honest - more so if we go up anyway.

Maybe scrap Mayor off the list above, sounds like he's already had contact from Wrexham.

Me too, unless he gets a ridiculous offer and is a guaranteed number 1 somewhere way up the pyramid, I don't think he goes this summer. More likely the one after though if he has another season like the this.

I don't agree to be fair, I think he'd be one of the squad who can step up to that level.

The other issue being, he's our best centre half so there's plenty need upgrading before we get around to Stubbs.

6 goals in 141 appearances for an attacking midfielder playing in a side with 2 promotions? That figure is horrendous if we're being honest.

He's also now 32 so I'm not too unhappy he's probably going elsewhere given we desperately need pace and legs injecting into the side.

Yeah as I said he just hasn't been able to stay fit last 2 seasons. He's had 49 starts, 4 goals and 9 assists, looks to be playing a bit deeper than he did at Bury over the last few seasons. Sounds like Stockport are interested too.

Context is key. You don't know that their fans didn't rate him, or the club either. If he had a few months on his contract and had lost his place to a long term injury, they may have let him go either because they doubted his recovery from injury or in gratitude for his service to allow his to secure a move and a new contract.

Gratitude for his service is a big reach - he only played 29 games for them.

He was also released by Fleetwood after just 9 appearences. Another L1 club. Seeing a pattern...

Paudie had no pace at all yet he's a regular now in league 1. To be fair most centre backs in the lower league are slow.

I think the new manager at Exeter Gary Caldwell didn't like him for some reason. Stubbs was part of the defence that got Exeter promoted in 2022. Caldwell said that Stubbs was injured, but if you look at his Twitter feed Stubbs said he was fully fit, just not chosen. I don't think he is injury prone at all.

Barton liked him at Fleetwood but the knee injury was just a killer for him. Had surgery which was expected to be a 6-8 weeks recovery time in October 2020, he didn't play again until December 2021. But Barton was sacked when Stubbs knee was just beginning to get worse, Grayson came in and wasn't interested but Matt Taylor was a fan of his at Exeter and he offered a player with an unknown knee injury a 2 & half year deal. They didn't even see him play for nearly a year into his deal. His dad Alan also had this same knee problem throughout his career. When he did get fit and in the team, he was the first name on the teamsheet from the looks of the interviews at the time, started 21 of the 24 remaining games with Taylor giving him the odd rest. Stubbs had another flare up in pre season so was eased into the season, had 2 starts before his knee flared up again. He was injured seemingly until November-ish but Caldwell said he wasn't fit pretty much until Stubbs left in January, so someone was fibbing.

Assuming it's the same here but it's thought that Stubbs wasn't involved in full training at Exeter and also had a specific physio plan to try nurse anything with his knee. Guessing it's a genetic thing if his dad also had the exact same problem, but looking through Alans career details, he'd never complete a full season, having to dip in and out the line ups to heel. Again guessing, but sports science has probably jumped since the early 00s and clubs will maybe know how to handle this injury better nowadays.

Solid so far, happy with his defensive work. There's an obvious pace issue, you question how much he sprints when you see him running on the pitch but if defending at a certain style or at a certain pace helps him stay fit, I don't blame the lad. If we carry on playing with a high line, he needs a quick partner, or maybe to be part of a back 3/5?

Got a bit of stick on here but he is a very decent centre half

A bit rash at times but you could count on him to put his body on the line, brave player

If we do go up I'd add either Aiden Flint or Sonny Bradley to compliment what we have in defence.

Both sound very ambitious and probably replacements for Stubbs rather than the pacey type that would compliment him. Both certainly good players though, if possibly a little out of our reach.

Sonny Bradley would be superb. At only 31 he still has a few miles on the clock. He has been a part of Luton's successful Championship campaign so even if we went up to League 1 I could see this as a reach too far.

I alson saw Nick Powell was released by Stoke. He will be another cracking signing for a L1 club.

Certainly always scored goals but don't know a massive amount about him as a player. Wonder if he'll drop a division this time?
