No I'm not joking. We won't sign better than Vernam if he leaves. We're finishing 14th for a number of reasons, and a poor squad is one. That isn't to say that there aren't a few quality players in that squad and now they're benefiting from a proper coach and proper set up, the bits of quality are starting to show. If you don't rate Vernam, fine. I do. He has quality, he has potential, and he's at the perfect age. He's one of a handful we need to make sure we keep.

Vernham is in a purple patch at the moment but like others hr hasn’t been that brilliant throughout his time at the club

Agree Park , but it’s how he’s been used (and abused ? ) by managers.
He’s been much much better under MH , primarily he wasn’t rushed back after injury, and I think he’s respected MH man management.

Fully agree 100% but if we've done our usual fk up and left it too late then it Is what it is. It will be very hard without doubt to find someone better in his position at this level, but that's not to say MH won't come up with someone good enough for what we need if we have to replace him. To offset my disappointment if we lose him I am intrigued/hopeful or more likely just blind faith at what the MH pull could do for us with recruitment this summer, so as I said previous it's not end of the world and we hopefully still progress forwards.

Certainly is a purple patch no doubt, but I and many others I'm sure could always tell if used correctly and with better quality around him he was definitely a high end player at this level.

Shudders at thoughts of a Kurtis Robinson, Theo Guthrie type being unveiled as the summer window slams shut with the accompanying “we spent all summer trying to get this deal over the line”.

And that is now probably the biggest reason we can offer in keeping him at the club. Another season under Hughes guidance might be the best option he has to progress his career to everyone's benefit

For sure, his finishing for most of the first half of the season was abysmal, and we can expect it to return to that sooner or later.

However I do agree with @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam in that we need to be keeping our better players, and his all-round game is good. He's fast, he's skilful, and he doesn't go missing when it's not working out for him or us.

In fact, I'd say in any sport it's imperative to try to field as many players in a 'purple patch'/good form as possible. Sometimes, especially at this level, things can just 'click' and a player scores a hatful.

I'd be sure to try to tie Vernam down for next season because he's as likely to score 4 as he is 14 from what I've seen.

If he did leave, though, for a bigger club then fair enough.

I do like Vernam. I just don't agree that we should find an extra £2-300k to keep these players.
They've been bang average for most of the season.
Is it a 'proper set up' or is it that they could be unemployed in a couple of months?

You say 'players' but for me Vernham is the only one from our current bunch i'd within reason obviously push the boat out as they say for, the rest i don't think we'd struggle to keep hold of anyhow if we showed them genuine interest and direction, but the thing with Vernham for me is he's probably the only one we have who could definitely make the step up if we could get promoted, so wouldn't be having to pay of his contract like with many we seem to do. 1 or 2 others may be able to step up like Watt but not for definite for me.

18 months ago Vernam couldn't make the step up from League 2 Grimsby to League 1 Burton. He left with Burton bottom of League 1 and he couldn't get in the team.
He may have improved. Let's see what happens in the summer.

Some fans are taking this to mean Dion will be signing for us.

I suppose it makes sense, Nathan Jones clearly rates the lad, but has expressed some alarm at his injury issues outside Luton.

With Luton potentially even being a Premier League club next season, they probably don't need a mercurial 22 year old on their books, and they've been clear he needs game time - and what better manager to play under in L2?

He's also been rather glowing about the club on social media now that he's playing.

Things seem to be pointing towards him staying.

Not sure on Pereira on what I've seen but that's very limited time tbf, what I've seen so far myself is a bit better Gillead copy. Many of our fans though who have seen much more of him than me want him on board, and what I do seem to find more often than not is the majority decision of clubs fans thoughts is more often than not right, like when you sign a player and the selling clubs forum are pleased/estatic then its usually always a b0llock dropped. So on that theory I'd say sign him up if possible as he seems to receive more positive comments than negative, he also is at a good age for improvement. He no doubt has talent but personally for me my guess is he's nowhere near the level Luton will be looking for, so If he's happy and settled here then It's a no brainer for Luton to sell him to us with big progress add ons for them should he come good, as we'd obviously agree to otherwise we couldn't afford him probably. A I said above I've not seen a great deal of the lad but following reports etc. I don't think he'll have done enough to attract interest from above L2 so it will probably come down to if Luton thin he's 1st team material or not very soon. My guess is he'll be our player next season.

Agreed with all of that, pretty much.

Yeah, I have the same reservations, I don't like non-scoring forwards/wingers, but a good team should be able to afford one in the first team at any one time - as long as it's helping the players that can score get more time and space/chances.

I don't think he's shown he's Championship level, but there's some real skill here.

If we do sign him, I think that's an impressive signing given the plaudits he's been getting - he's always been regarded highly, it seems.

Wouldn't be a bad first signing at all, but nor does it solve our goalscoring issues - a tidy piece of the puzzle with potential resale value, I'd say.

Fully agree, from my limited viewing I've not quite seen what others have, but going with my majority fans opinion theory I wouldn't be disappointed with signing him, but for me it has to be a realistic wage wise type and not a push the boat out as I have him down as a bit of a gamble still.

No but he has quality and needs consistency. A good manager and team around him can unlock that. When he is on it he is a real asset.

He is one of the better ones imo.

Whats to say Vernam would've signed a contract if offered? That offer would have come from Adams who was such an inspiration you could see that the players were scared of their own shadow. Ran players into the ground and had the players up for target practice from the fans by hasn't them out to dry. I can imagine any of the better players would've been glad with the approach Adams took, just so they didn't have to turn it down.

The key to pining these guys down could be who comes through the door. We have to make a statement of intent and not a statement of sustainability.
