Would say it's a case of lessons learnt from last season where we had a dependency on players that might not be able to complete 40 games a season and then not having the strength in depth. We've seen that the likes of Angol, Walker, Eisa and even Cook to an extent can pick up injuries and knocks. The fact that we have players that aren't even guaranteed a spot on the bench that would've walked into last season's team speaks volumes.

Couple that with the five subs element and a bigger squad seems a wise approach. Think it's fair to say that we're giving Hughes what he needs.

One issue is that although we have 5 subs, the bench is still only 7 players. Of those 7, 1 will be a keeper and at least 1 a defender so even though we have plenty of options, MH will basically need to decide before the game what the subs are going to be.
I wonder what Jake Young is thinking this morning - brilliant performance on Tues would be looking to start on Sat. Not sure I see him in the squad now?
Similarly Angol - is he now 4th choice striker and we're only playing 1 up top?

 

We have the perfect mix for 442 but I doubt very much he will play it. I think Dion will probably play 10 to start

 

Frankly, I'm more than happy for Angol not to be in the squad. I do not think he is the answer for a team looking for promotion.

He does everything OK - but is arguably the worst at all aspects of forward play, i.e. has players far superior to him in any position you care to name.

It's a shame because I like his character and seems fully engaged in the club.

 

Not sure I agree playing to his strength and he is a good option

 

Judging from the video, showing Dion's team entrance, the sheer joy Songo's showed in welcoming Pereira back - he's going nowhere. I've never seen a player or squad look so relaxed.



Sharp contrast to January 31st, when the ice in the dressing room had nothing to do with the weather but the deteriorated relationship between Adams and Canavan

our issue isn’t CM. We are able to dominate possession. The issue was we didn’t have anyone on the wings besides Banks that could do anything with it. Mainly down to injuries but also because Angol is low on confidence an form at the moment. Having Dion on one side an Banks on the other means our creative output has now doubled as we can utilise both wings

 

Forget Walker for the medium term and Eisa for the season?

I refer the honarable readers to my earlier post last month. I still think Songo’o will be off. I hope not because he’s a very good utility player, but we have a very bloated squad and there will be some outgoings.

 

Thing is we aren't very bloated in defence or CM

 

Very true that’s why I don’t want him to leave,but he won’t be happy being a bit part player with the odd appearance in the Papa John’s trophy. Adams will offer him a first team place.

 

Given our track record with injuries we need a big squad. Going back as far as McCall's last stint in charge our seasons have been derailed due to the loss of key players for long periods and we haven't had quality to replace them.
Walker's injury (had it happened last season) would have really hampered us. This season not so.
I doubt that at any point this season we'll have a full rota of outfield players available for a game due to injuries and suspensions.
