Agree. In a perfect world, we move Threlkeld, Kelleher and Cook on, and we sign someone like Odusina, a quality RB like Callum Johnson, a proven striker and another quality wideman, like Perreira back on loan. Do all that, and we'd have a squad that would take some stopping.

 

Agree with that, very likely apart from Cook. Think Him, Angol, Harratt and Wood will be our striker quartet IMO. Young as well to consider. Really don't think Harratt was brought in to play second fiddle and be there for Pizza Cup games and 10 mins here and there.

Dion may be brought back to improve the Forward options.

 

What's Hendrie's position?

I mean, asking this shows half the problem. We have too many, let's call them "utility players", in our back line for my liking.

I won't bore people again, but I will - when are we signing a proper right back?

 

Cook Angol and Harratt could all easily hit double figures all 3 have different styles so Hughes may go with them

 

No Mansfield is definitely in the East Midlands.

 

I refer the honourable gentleman to my earlier response (amendment !!) accepting this as a fact.

 

Hendrie is a RB, albeit he can be nothing more than cover in a squad with aspirations of promotion surely?! Agree completely we need better in that position. Can't work out why we've given him a 2 year deal...

 

Can't imagine him being a top earner. I think he also played CB for Hartlepool.
He's a decent squad player but we need better as first choice.

 

I think I'd be ok with those 3 as central striking options. The slight worry would be:

1. Angol's fitness record
2. Harratt did very well in a brief spell at Vale, but he's young and not really what you'd call 'proven' as yet
3. Cook is a very useful option off the bench, but struggles when he starts as a lone striker.

TBH though, its the defensive reinforcements and additional wide man that I think are the priority.

 

Because it’s a squad game , squads with high ambitions need reliable cover all round the pitch. Loanees have their place but sometimes cost you more in the long term. So he’s fine with me on that basis

 

to add to the defensive conundrum. Hudders have form for recalling players from loan so it would be wise to get an additional CB in if that does end up being the case

as for the lad we seem to be in for from Sheffield United, that would leave us with quite a lot of options in midfield. Smallwood, East, Sutton, Gilliead Osadebe. I don’t see how signing another CM would work unless Sutton is going back to being a RB an Gillead is going back on the wing

 

If we have 3 first Team CBs that makes Songo a MF option aswell.

 

I think Cook is going to start as his main option. He looks visibly slimmer already than the end of last season. 12 goals from 35 starts in L2 last season is still a good return in a poor side, he just did what he's done his whole career in scoring in bursts. Just 2 goals from Feb onwards (16 starts) is poor. Hopefully with a full season of Walker along with Chapman and potentially Pereira or Eisa from the other side, he might have a better ball in.

Also, not linked to the points about but when did everyone assume Gilly is now a CM? He had 5 games there when we barely had any CMs fit/on form..... I wouldn't assume he is now a designated CM in the squad after 5 games, probabaly more in the Osadebe role of a winger who can cover CM if needed. Pre-season might tell, but i think a young lad on loan i midfield will still be brought in.

 

We can't have div 1 / championship quality high earners for every position. Hendrie will do for me if we spend the money elsewhere in the team

 

If we are going 1 upfront with a three behind Angol starts every day of the week.

 

I think Gilli excelled better at CM than he did on the WG which is why most fans and hopefully Hughes will consider him there.

 

I agree. But do think he will be rotated as well as to manage his potential fitness issues. Running him into the ground will see him out for 2-3 months.

 

I'm not saying he's not a steady enough player, he clearly is. Just think we could do with better for the good of a promotion push. I hope this position is going to be strengthened

 

For me that has to be the aim. To get our of L2 we need a squad capable of performing in L1
