Maybe he’s just being the canny manager. Play down expectations, keep the CEO/owner on their toes by suggesting you didn’t quite get what you wanted etc. Maybe he’s just being honest. As I say, for all the fanfare, we haven’t built what I’d call an ambitious squad. Don’t get me wrong - its more balanced, it’s better than last season and we brought players in early. All positives. But when you get a quality manager like Adams, I find it frustrating that we haven’t found that extra couple of hundred grand that would have added 2 more quality players to this squad. That’s probably all we’re short, and I think it may cost us. We’ve already had some bad luck/news in terms of injuries. If we loose one of the Cook(e)s, and one of Vernam or Gillead, we’ll struggle.

All that said, and for all the talk of us needing more depth up front, it’s our defence that worries me. Neither keeper is convincing, we’ve looked weak at right back especially and I’m not sold on POC.

Yes probably agree. Shows what perhaps what another 1-2k season tickets may have brought?

Long term , unforeseen injuries to two players , both probably covering for a similar playing position, was certainly not in the plans.

    Life in the khazi league!

He said in all the time he has been a manager he has hardly ever been able to land his first choice

I bet you did a survey of fans of every club in this league they could go through the team and say the same things about certain of their players. Finance in this league mean compromise has to be made

This term “khazi” league really irritates me. We are here on merit unfortunately and we aren’t any better than the other 23 teams in it. We have this weird arrogance which is based solely on season ticket sales.
We don’t have the infrastructure to be a intriguing purchase for a potential buyer. To get along even in the championship we need to be looking at stadium ownership and our own training complex. Add that to the fact that we don’t have an owner that will fill the holes of the numbers another poster talked about at Milwall then we are exactly where we should be.
Have a look at league 1 this season and the stature of some of teams in there and then looking below us with the likes of Chesterfield, Notts County and Wrexham. I’m not saying we should settle for mediocracy but there has to be some realism and I think we are in and around this “khazi” league for a few years yet.

I was as underwhelmed as everyone at the deadline day signing but look at what Adams did at Morecambe with a squad of players who looked little better on paper.

The most important thing in League 2 is having cohesion. A manager with a plan, who players play for. Fitness and organization are also key.

in terms of ability most of the players in this league are much of a muchness. Let’s not use our squad’s ‘quality’ as an excuse for failure this year.

our squad isn’t without its faults. GK and RB look likely to cause us issues all year IMO, but Derek is the man. If Cambridge and Morecambe were good enough to go up last season then a squad with Ridehalgh, Canavan, Songoo, Watt, Cooke, Cook et al is surely good enough.

write off the cup farce immediately, go back to Orient and make sure we pick ourselves back up.

I’m not having ‘lack of quality’ in transfer incomings costing us this year. A good manager gets the best out of the group and Dezza is the man.

I share your concerns regards the strength in depth of the squad.
The blue-print for near certainty for promotion, should be to look at Bolton from January last season.
Facts are Mr Rupp doesn't want to invest the amount required to emulate them, that's an observation not a criticism.
We're looking at the alternative option of the cheaper Adams blueprint, relying on his abilities working with a lesser squad, luck with injuries ( yeah haha) , and maybe just maybe third spot, if not Wembley.
Hell of a gamble, but one we've to take without a deeper pocket of Mr Rupp

Do we need deeper pockets from Rupp? I disagree. Cheltenham, Morecambe and Cambridge went up last year with Bolton. None had good budgets.

The reason they all went up is because Mike Duff, Mark Bonner and Derek Adams galvanized their squads and did brilliant jobs, esp Bonner and Adams. Both teams were expected to be in relegation scraps.

We’ve forgotten what a good manager looks like at this football club……but take a look into that fancy home dugout tomorrow.

Adams takes us up this year.

It’s a commons phrase used throughout the EFL from my observations , sorry it irritates.

The aim of any self respecting club should always be to never drop into the Khazi league. The standard of football is generally terrible and this season is the weakest Khazi for some years.

If we dont go up this year it wont be because of Adams

It pisses me off that after all the money been thrown around over the last few years we dont back the best proven manager weve had in a long time

I thought the increased ticket prices , getting shut of the high earners plus 12k members would have meant we pushed the boat out this year and had a real push whilst its there for the taking ... appears not

We need to be in L1 at least even based on simple things like budgets yes we are here on merit or failure but we can't just accept ongoing failure

No it won't be easy to get out and some seem to think Adams is guaranteed promotion which is silly but we are right to not accept L2 football this club shouldn't be doing this badly and we need to fix it asap Rupp Sparks and the rest are accountable

Agree with your point about players being much of a muchness. Just like us, most teams in this league have players that can be absolutely brilliant one week, mediocre the next and dreadful the game after that. We all watch games sometimes and think a certain player for the opposition looks a class above and maybe feel a bit jealous they don't play for us, then the following week they go on to have a howler. That's the thing about players at this level, they aren't very consistent, if they were, they'd be playing in a higher league.
Like you say, it's about the manager getting the best out of what they've got and lucky for us this year, we have a manager who seems to be quite good at doing that.

I thought we signed Adams as an alternative to pushing the boat out ie a manager who can work to a budget ie a small budget lol

I'm sure that's exactly what we did... but reading between the lines he sounds a frustrated man

If you set expectation you have to back that with informed judgement. We planned early we were told, so something falling short if Adams feeling frustrated so early in his tenure.Ryan constantly refers to the importance of making the correct calls this season round. I sense a power struggle coming and Adams reasserting his position.

How do people know Adams is sounding frustrated. Always sounds the same to me . Monotone scots accent and does not give much away. He will have know what the budget was before he agreed to join us and if he did not like it he would have stayed at Morecambe.
Some of our fans are alwys looking to knock the club in any way they can.
