His talent isn’t better than league one until he actually shows evidence that it is. Poncing around in Man Utd’s U23s means diddly squat.

Pele would have got a game under Collins.

I would argue that if O'Brien had the same amount of talent as Riley, then he would have been snapped up by a bigger premier league team.
So on the basis that he is at least of a similar level ability wise, why has he not looked at what O'Brien does in terms of energy, running, closing players down and reading of the game. Then thought I can do that and gone and shown it.
Maybe he lacks the drive and ambition which seems unlikely considering where he has come from, you would expect a player trying to make it at Man Utd to have those strengths in depth.

Tomlinson went from us to Man Utd which I'm sure you already know, then suffered a very bad injury, who knows what might have happened otherwise.
Ben Muirhead I would prefer to hold my counsel on him, wasted talent.

We've had quite a few poor players from the Man Utd youth system at various points.

The one 'rule' seems to be that Man Utd youngsters get a shot at league football - from there, it's a scatter gun-style set of outcomes.

The idea that 'touted' youngsters fare well in the adult leagues just isn't true, nor should it be expected.

I would have liked to have seen the reverse. McBurnie got rave reviews at a youth tournament for Man U (We lent him) Would have been interesting watching is development there? To be fair Swansea have done pretty good with him.

Riley has been a bit unlucky.true he wasn't great like the rest of them at the start of the season he picked up an injury and with the signing if caddis he hasn't had a look in.
He was highly thought of by people who watched young players at Manchester.
A loan move might be a good idea instead of permanent.

Riley must be one of the ones not working hard enough in training to earn their chance?

He can’t be judged on appearances as he hasn’t made any.

Certain Hopkin alluded to something like that recently in an interview that players were not fit enough were not in the squad.

Plus 3 right backs we have at the club? One of them being our best performer over the last few weeks for consistency since he came in, in Caddis

I think a lot of people are getting confused with the article in the Telegraph (?) which states Rupp was putting in one million.

Asssuming it was on transfer fees and are now kicking off.

For a league one side our squad is massive and rightly being trimmed down by Hopkin

For Riley, read Eddie Johnson. Not good enough for the top, but not suited to lower league football, bit of a quandry

Except for talent and actual performance are not the same thing. There are plenty of players who you can't deny their talent but never put the other part together to play at the level they should do.His raw talent is higher than league one level, he just hasn't developed the other aspects yet to compliment that talent.

What is raw talent and how do we attribute this ‘talent’ to football? A fair assessment of Riley would have been after a period of time under Hopkin but that now looks a non starter. Could be for various reasons, it could be Hopkin doesn’t have a role that fits his skill set, could be Hopkin might want to put Rileys salary to use elsewhere in the squad it has been mentioned Riley is on a decent salary for what would be a development squad player.

But from what i’ve seen so far he suffers from what a lot of academy players suffer from, competent at passing and a decent level of fitness but ultimately no real position on the field. Looks weak for a full back and limited as a right sided midfielder. Good luck to him.

Definitely think Riley would benefit from a loan out (Mansfield?) and check his progress. Either that or get Sheff Utd to take over his contract (with a sell on). My thinking there is that Wilder seemed to like him last time he was there.

I'm not falling out either. It's one of my NY resolutions :)

I was very loosely paraphrasing. Problem is, when you come out and say fans deserve much better, and will continue to invest, then the vast majority automatically think that investment equates to the purchase of new players. Because at that time, that is what we needed - we couldn't buy a win, and the players weren't playing to the full of their potential, let alone for the team. That was something tangible us fans could relate to - and therefore expect fixing as a matter of priority.

The talk of admin and financial mismanagement did the rounds as a rumour during the end of last year. To many it was dismissed as a rumour, because in our eyes, there is no way that we could be going out of business because we had two relatively wealthy businessmen running the club. It would be inconceivable that the club could be in financial dire straits, as the club had only just recently changed hands, and apparently all the accounts were in order. Of course, as Edin's role in the club started to be further and further dragged through the mud, then yes, financial dealing were questioned. Can you point me to any evidence that Rupp has been injecting money into the club to prevent us going out of business? I haven't seen any quotes or statements from him on this matter. Transparency is one of the things we have been lacking through this new regime, and I would have seriously hoped that Rupp would have understood that he can definitely gain some respect by providing it.

I'm not really buying that investors only really get more hands on once they know something is going seriously wrong. I'm also not naive enough to expect day to day runnings from an investor, but I do know, and would expect that someone who has invested enough money to own 70% of the club, should be looking at the numbers and holding board meetings on a monthly basis.

Unfortunately from Rupps point of view, it comes across as if he just shut his eyes and opened his ears to Edin for the best part of his tenure. I'm glad that there was enough eventual noise (from staff, from performances and from the fans) to get through to him. For sure he was left with a lot of egg on his face, and I believe his very angry statement which he published shortly after Edins departure, was part knee jerk, and part lip service to the fans.

As I finished off with "I hope I am wrong" then I hope you can see that I am not a doom monger or a "I told you so" type of person. I really, really want us to build on this new foundation we've had in terms of a manager getting results, the players putting a shift in, the fans getting back on board and the general sense of optimism that is now running through the club. Of course, if the statements you say about Rupp investing money into the club to keep us from the bailiffs door are true, then that dampens a lot of expectation. Hope as you say, that situation is also resolved now.

I still think that Rupp needs to show his hand though - either by coming out and explaining the current financial status of the club, or by backing up DH with some funds for some players to ensure that we're in League One next year.

So ‘how do you understand this”? Reasonable question.
