Its a very good point. The signing of players usually goes with a quick wiki check of their stats and what division they have played in. Easy thing to do, i'm guilty of it when i see a players name mentioned.
Take Parky's promotion winning team for example. Apart from when Andrew Davies came in, i wasn't particularly enthusiastic about the signings that were made. Yet that side went on to have the success it did. And yet how many of that side actually went on to bigger and better things. Nahki the obvious one, Meredith, you could argue Jonny Mac. But that was it. The success was down to the gelling of the team and a high end goal scorer like Wells.
Same with McCalls Wembley playoff side, how many of those have bettered themselves after leaving Bradford? Meredith, Cullen after his promotion. No one else. It was the team and the pieces of that team that fit together to complement the jigsaw puzzle.
How many promotions and relegations a player has had is irrelevant, its how this unit of players performs on the pitch together. What for me does have relevance is how Bowyer has been in this situation before and been successful with it. Its no guarantee but i see Bowyer having a lot of traits that Chris Wilder has. His man management skills, built up over years of coaching and researching management, seems to be the perfect fit for this club. I guess only time will tell.

That's true, but all three were mainly played in unsuitable positions during their time here.

I’d say Ball was played out of position, but the other 2 are midfielders, one creative and one supposedly an enforcer. They both had the opportunity to fulfill their roles

Excellent response. And you highlight a potential flaw in my thinking, its not just about the individual components which I'm emphasising upon...

I'd agree with you on Akpan, didn't do enough but Butterfield can pick a pass but he needs people to move. There was just no movement in that team last year, with wingers and somebody who can get in behind and stretch a team I think we'd of seen a different player.

Still a young guy maybe a change of club and manager will lift him worth the risk.

    Eh?

Butterfield played both deep and attacking central midfield and Akpan played in the middle all season. I possibly get the point with Ball (although he's not a striker so....) but the other two? Sorry but I'm honestly baffled.

The 'history makers' as they have been coined is a prime example. Throughout last seasons fiasco how i lost count of people wishing they could have that team replace the squad of no good shiesters we had last season. And yet if we analyse the 2013 side like we analyse players arriving at VP this season we would have more than likely written them off before a ball was kicked. I mean come on, a 35 year old journeyman from Rochdale, what sort of signing is that? A lot players that contributed that season, its hard to even remember some of them, especially the league cup squads. And being honest, at times the football from that 2013 side was average at best, not anywhere near teams of 87 and 98. Yet we yearn for them when the going gets bad. Why? Because to a man they gave their best to a manager they believed in.

Football is littered with talented individuals who can turn a game at the drop of a hat, they can win you games with individual brilliance, whether it be a goal or last gasp tackle. But they won't win you promotion. The sum of those individuals, the team, does that.

I don’t need to bring a filafax full of information to have an opinion on the player like some seem to think on here.

I trust my judgement from what I’ve seen and heard about him. He will be a fantastic/good/great signing

Previously played well for other teams (promoted too) including at a higher level. We got rid of Killa the season before (Player of the season the year before)and I bet our rivals went wow they must have some team them Bratfud boys. to let him go...... Super huge Rotehrham don't need him so that's our gain.

Palmer is a good gamble at those level so lets see!

Akpan is never a defensive midfielder in a month of Sundays. People just presume he is because of his physique yet he was played as that player all of last season, often on his own. He's more of a box to box player but needs to be partnered with someone disciplined if he's to play that role.

Butterfield more often than not was played way too deep, infact at Walsall hopkin played him as a DM and at Oxford he played left wing. When he actually played as the furthest forward midfielder (posh at home, Charlton away) we saw a good player.

Fair play, maybe it was the system rather than the position then although I just think in Akpans case it's simply because he's not good enough.
