Assist stats are largely meaningless. If you want proof just Google Paul McLaren.

Not being funny, but what exactly makes him a “fantastic signing”? What can you tell those of us that know little about him, why you describe him in that way.

If they hadn't loaned him perhaps they'd have been somewhere near the playoffs in January and then completely missed out come May?

You can't say they didn't benefit just because they missed out on promotion.

West Ham had a recall clause in at least the Cullen deal. I remember it being discussed all through January.

I agree with this stance. I know sweet FA about him and the only tangible information i have, is that Rotherham do not feel he is good enough for League 1.

That’s true but he played 52 games in the championship and commanded a fee when he moved to Rotherham. He doesn’t on the face of it seem to be Bowyers type of player because he is described as lightweight but he seems by what other fans say to have a good range of passing and a decent free kick taker. The fact he hasn’t played much with Rotherham is down to the opinion of their manager. We will have to make our own judgement

So lucky he's playing in Div 2.

He has to prove he's good enough for league 2 now.

Why does he need to prove it when he helped Burton get promoted from this league, and league 1?

Rotherham changed to a long ball team last season they don’t use the midfield enough so it’s likely he isn’t their sort of player like Ball last season he probably doesn’t fit their system

I particularly agree with your last line. Well in respect, many of the new signings fall into that category, in fairness.

I noticed he signed for Rotherham for a fee when they was in League 1, signing from Burton.

I have to admit I'm puzzled by this lad..

Went out on loan to Oldham in Burtons promotion season , yet the following season when Burton were in the Championship, played 3/4 of games. Its a head scratcher.

On face value, played a good percentage of games across a season with the exception of last season in the Championship.

I think it was @BoingBoing@BoingBoing whom commented on his lack of assists and goals, which I initially thought "Meh" but the compilation from 2016, which you correctly alluded to, raised expectations.

    Definitely a head scratcher!

Hope it's a successful loan for both player and club.

I see it like this as well, he’s dropped a division with relegation yet they deem him surplus to requirements. Thats not to say he won’t be a success for us, the potential is there for him to do a job for us, but i remember a fair few getting excited at this stage last season because we had signed players from higher divisions and look how that turned out.
All down to Bowyer getting them working as a team.

Played at a much higher level. Right age. Looks good on the ball.

    I’ll be proved right.

Yeah, I'm aware of players dropping down divisions and being excited. I was guilty on occasions!

Palmer is a head scratcher, as I have already said. Instrumental in promotion from league 2 with Burton. Part of the Rotherham team promoted from league 1.

Yet, shipped out on loan to Oldham in Burtons league 1 promotion season. Little game time in Rotherhams relegation season last year, admittedly in The Championship despite signing for a fee.

And surplus at Rotherham this year in league 1, where he has gained promotion before.

I'm wondering and it's all quess work... But is it more about aptitude than ability?

The thing with these big clubs is that they either have lots of quality players to choose from or have lots money to bring quality players in, which usually means that a few, even if they are good enough, are going to miss out. The best example I can give you is Vaughan at Portsmouth. He'd consider himself proven at league 1 level if not higher but as he was playing behind the likes of Pitman and Bogle, he was always going struggle to establish himself and was eventually deemed surplus to requirements. It doesn't mean he's not good enough, he was just a victim of circumstances that can happen when playing for a 'big' club.

On Palmer, purely going on what Burton and Oldham fans have to say about him, I think it's a good signing. Most are complimentary and some of this praise is even evident when he was playing in the Championship. I just hope we can keep him for the full season and Bowyer brings in a proper DM to play next to him, because that midfield still lacks a lot of the key attributes needed for league 2 football. I don't think Palmer addresses the defensive side of things and neither do the other 5 midfielders on our books.

    Thanks for the response.

How weird. I replied to @Rogered Tart@Rogered Tart above, basically questioning attitude (with no genuine substance, so basically quessing!) and was thinking of Vaughan when replying. Particular in respect to the Sunderland fan on here whom lambasted his attitude. If he was down the pecking order at a league 1 club behind Pitman and Bogle, why the drop to the basement league again? Surely, if he was good enough and his attitude was good enough, he would have suitors in League 1?

Anyhow, quessing on my part aside, reasoned response and I particular agree on your last sentence.

Ball, Butterfield and Akpan all “played at a much higher level”, but I wouldn’t class any of them as ‘fantastic signings’.

I hope you are proved right
