Don’t need to play him themselves. Another club in L1 might want him. Huddersfield didn’t need Payne but it didn’t stop them getting us to renegotiate for him or lose him.

He's got an agency now and I think Palmer is a client.

I wouldn’t disagree with your view; however isn’t it best to have quality in your team even for a short time? I know it is frustrating I feel the same as long as we don’t blow the budget in January in trying to get him to stay and leave ourselves short. I honestly don’t think anything would have saved us last season. This season feels entirely different as night and day. So hopefully we can achieve promotion this season.

Reality is most loans end up staying and the Payne situation was unique in that we were paying such a tiny percentage of his salary originally. I imagine we’re paying a lot more towards this lad. What happened with Payne basically rarely happens so I wouldn’t worry too much about it

I get what your saying and if in theory you could replace a player like for like in January then there wouldn't be much of a problem. Sadly that's unlikely and it just causes unnecessary upheaval imo.

Fantastic signing. If he does well and goes in January, so what? Must mean we are doing well surely?

Why are people worried about his recall clause it’s highly unlikely they’d want him back with only 5 months left on his contract unless to try get a small fee which we’d be in pole position to offer

If he does well for us, then the whole team should be in a good position. If he leaves, then we should be an attractive option for a replacement, as playing in or around the promotion slots, in a big ground in front of around 15,000 fans is likely to be an attractive proposition to a player and other clubs.

When it ultimately boils down to it he is the parents clubs player. They don’t have to loan him out

That’s true but he played 52 games in the championship and commanded a fee when he moved to Rotherham. He doesn’t on the face of it seem to be Bowyers type of player because he is described as lightweight but he seems by what other fans say to have a good range of passing and a decent free kick taker. The fact he hasn’t played much with Rotherham is down to the opinion of their manager. We will have to make our own judgement

Played at a much higher level. Right age. Looks good on the ball.

    I’ll be proved right.

The thing with these big clubs is that they either have lots of quality players to choose from or have lots money to bring quality players in, which usually means that a few, even if they are good enough, are going to miss out. The best example I can give you is Vaughan at Portsmouth. He'd consider himself proven at league 1 level if not higher but as he was playing behind the likes of Pitman and Bogle, he was always going struggle to establish himself and was eventually deemed surplus to requirements. It doesn't mean he's not good enough, he was just a victim of circumstances that can happen when playing for a 'big' club.

On Palmer, purely going on what Burton and Oldham fans have to say about him, I think it's a good signing. Most are complimentary and some of this praise is even evident when he was playing in the Championship. I just hope we can keep him for the full season and Bowyer brings in a proper DM to play next to him, because that midfield still lacks a lot of the key attributes needed for league 2 football. I don't think Palmer addresses the defensive side of things and neither do the other 5 midfielders on our books.

I don’t like the recall option either. But as I say this is better than bringing in an unknown trialist. Loans are vital in lower league football

They did. For about 13 minutes against Middlesbrough before Hope got sent off, lol.

Palmer, Akpan and Scannell were in and out of that Burton 2017/18 team that got relegated. All 3 of them spent time warming the bench together. Scannell got crocked in January and Palmer moved to Rovrum in January.

Yes, and its one of the many problems with the modern day loan system.
