it makes perfect sense. you are slagging off Vaughan saying we shouldn't sign him. I got told I had unrealistic expectations when I said I don't rate Richard O'Donnell! you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think we can do better than James Vaughan in League Two.

 

Who is this George Andrews and how would he know this kind of detail? Is it likely to be genuine mate?

Who said he’s been on £15k anyway? I can’t see him being on that kind of money since his ‘glory’ days. When he signed for Bury, he’d have been on £4-£5k max and when he left, he would have been paid handsomely, but I doubt they would have trebled his money.

As you say, I’d be surprised if we are paying £5k never mind more than that

 

He was in the championship with Sunderland and Wigan so I'd say something around 10k-15k was probably right.

 

Vaughan won't even be on anywhere near 5 grand a week. About half that, would be my guess.

He'll be a very wealthy man and for all his quality, a mixture of injuries and joining successful clubs who've had real depth of quality, he hasn't nailed down a regular spot for 3 or 4 years.

Maybe he just wants to join a club where he'll play regularly and at a level where he believes he will score a lot of goals and have some fun....

I'd be delighted if and when this comes off.

I pointed out that his record hasn’t been great since he left Bury. That’s factual Ricc, not slagging him off. If his dropping down to L2 means he recovers his Bury form, I’m all for it. And even if he doesn’t, hopefully the competition with Doyle brings out the best of him too

 

Not every Championship player gets paid £15k a week. I’d guess that McBurnie is on significantly less than that and he’s been in the Premier League recently.

As I said, I can’t see him getting his wages tripled just because he had 1 good season for Bury. By all means, he will have got a good wage rise, but not triple

The wages in the championship are astronomical. Have you seen the operating profit/loss figures for that league? Its 510m for the league last season - an average of 23m for EACH club. some players will be on less than 15k, but some will be on much more. I'd reckon 15k is about right as an average salary for first team squad players. It may even be slightly undercooked.

 

and why would you go to the effort of researching this and pointing it out to us if it wasn't to show your displeasure in us bringing him in?

 

I’ve not said anything about the average wages though. I’m talking specifically about Vaughan. In order to get an average, you have to have some players earning more and others less. I’m saying I put Vaughan in the ‘less’ category.

 

It’s only 2 years ago when he played all season for Bury and scored 24 goals in 37 games

Because someone said he had spent most of the last 2 seasons in the Championship, so like all debates, I tried to add data to suggest that’s not true.

I’ll be honest, if I was offered Maynard, Agard or Vaughan, I’d choose either of the first 2 before him. But if he signs a contract with us, I’m not going to be disappointed, as I was when we signed Mclean.

 

Fair enough. I'd disagree though. There are different layers of context. Given his age and history of playing in the top 2 leagues, and the fact that both were probably still getting parachute payments - and the sort of salaries Sunderland were paying at the time, which potential signings become aware of, 15k seems about right. It won't have been much less, if it was less.

 

Exactly. I think he'll want a bit more of that, rather than being a bit part at a club higher on the ladder.

 

Proper speculation is good. It generates excitement.....
