Do they though? From what I've seen, both are suggesting that things are improving and that the owners are trying to do a deal with Grayson.

The only real difference, I can remember, is that one of them thinks a deal, with Grayson, will be done and one is not so confident that Grayson will accept. And that can change from day to day until the decision is made/announced.

I am not sure budgets will be the deciding factor it could be other factors like training facilities and who recruits the players

I think we have to carry on with the current plan. Changing the structure and culture of a club takes time but we are moving towards a more long term, sustainable model.

Under Rhodes and Lawn it was short term, one season at a time and see if we could net a windfall from a cup run or player sale.

With the current ownership there is a plan of signing first team players with a potential sell on value alongside signing young players for the development squad who may become assets in the future. This is a much more sustainable model and is a model that we as fans have often envied when in place at other clubs like Peterborough.

Mistakes have been made, the owners have admitted it but I still think we are heading in the right direction if you look a bit more long term.

If we are to mirror Peterborough then we are going to have speculate quite a bit more than what we have this season. They actively target the top talent of the leagues below with competitive bids to match. Of all the money the money we speculated in the summer, the only player you could say would attract a bid was Robinson who was a free transfer.

I’ve already commented in another thread, that Rahic & Rupp, planned to buy City during 2015/2016.

The purchase was announced on the 24th May 2016.

I understand that the actual payments were being made in 4 instalments. I assume one was around the time of the purchase.

It has been suggested that they actually will pay £5 million to finalise the deal. Anyone who has a link to the precise sum is welcome to correct that.

One month later, on the 24th June 2016, the results of the referendum in respect of stay/leave the European Union were announced.

Since that time the value of the pound sterling has lost approximately 19% of its value.

If Rupp & Rahic paid a straight 25% in the first instalment, then subsequent instalments for the same amount of sterling will cost them less Euros. In simple terms the currency market fluctuations will mean that they have saved in the region of £750,000 .

Given that they may have this potential substantial windfall, which they had not budgeted for in purchasing the club, based on the rough status quo in currency exchange remaining, then without any additional cost to themselves, they could invest the resultant savings, by boosting the available budget, so that City were able to more than compete with the vast majority of other League 1 teams.

This would allow time so that their ‘development’ policy had an opportunity to mature, so that home nurtured talent, either provided a significant number of players to the first team, and/or selling players generated a profit.

And they have taken a fortune in player sales over the years and spent a fraction of it . They will do the same this summer with Maddison. And Marriott. With the players they have if I was a Peterborough fan I would be very disappointed not being in the play offs

They have taken a lot but have spent big to accumulate big. Don't forget how much they spent on Luke James, £500,000. You have to be prepared in the fact that not all gambles will pay off. Peterborough system can work, but only with large investment and being able to accept that you may lose big on some signings.

I would hope if we are ever in the position of selling players for big money it would all go into team strengthening

So who benefits from this "get em young sell them on", when there is no improvement of their footballing status, most Bradford City fans would be well pissed off if that is what our owners are going to do with any "gem" they unearth.
Surely it has to be reinvested in the first team if they are not prepared to fiance it themselves.

It could go on shareholder annual premiums! Perfectly legal if they make a profit!

I agree.if you like I would like to be like Crewe and instead of putting money into keeping afloat invest it all back into the team. Over the last few years we have benefited greatly from the sale of young players I hope they now can do it on a bigger scale. At the same time I hope the team progresses as well

Thats not how it works Park, the whole idea of the strategy is for the club to be self sustainable so i keep hearing. That strategy is built around developing players for resale, i would expect a small percentage of money made from player sales would go to team strengthening. Barnsley have made very big profits from a number of players who now play in the premiership such as Stones, Holgate, Mawson and others. But as a business were operating at quite large losses before these sales were taken into account. Point being that you can operate a successful strategy based on young talent and purchasing lower league talent but be prepared that you will have other clubs speculating on the very same players you want, you want the potential big sell on signings then you are going to have to be prepared to lose in the short term to get them.

You know, IF Grayson does sign, it doesn't neccessarily mean we can break out the champagne. We're thinking that if he does sign, it's because his terms have been agreed. Well to be honest, he hasn't exactly pulled up many trees during his time with us, and his stock might have gone from a furious boil, to a steady simmer. Didn't exactly do it at Sunderland either.

Which means, he might just have to take what's on offer, regardless if we tick all his boxes.

Yes I know that perhaps I should say most of the money. Unlike many clubs we start from a sound base no punitive interest to pay on debt

It's easy to forget that other than Green, the young players who we have received varying amounts for, were largely developed elsewhere although I'm sure they would have shown some raw talent. Tom Cleverley left VP for Man U when he was only 11, 17 years ago; Wisdom joined Liverpool 10 years ago at the ripe old age of 14 and the biggest money spinner of all, Fabian Delph had just turned 11 to join Leeds 17 years ago. We've earned very good money on these players and the Delph deal in particular has helped us to fund the first team well above the break-even level. But let's get real. The way we moved them all on at such a young age had nothing to with having a development squad or finding young stars, developing them and then selling them on. They were barely out of short pants when they were on City's books. And were we to have such jewels again, we'd get pretty well stuffed by the EPPP arrangements.

There's an enormous difference between on the one hand, identifying young talent in say their late teens, pushing them through our development squad process and then selling them on at a profit and on the other hand, how we handled the earlier and much younger examples. I hope we're successful at the former but many clubs have tried this approach and most have failed at it.

ps Forgot to mention the most recent who does fit the 'development strategy' approach better is Oli McB of course.
