True. There is no guarantee to anything in life but from my own perspective my father was my role model in life and he showed me what it was to respect the lives of others. Never committed an offence in his life bar a parking ticket,.ironically on the fateful day of May 11th 1985. I've never been arrested for anything and I'm very sure my son wont either. A good role model in life goes a very long way.

they did that. When the van went wrong side of the 606 the police didn’t follow.

Only one set of people to blame for the crash and that is them in the van

    Sentenced today.

3 people dead and this 16 year old will be free before he is 20.

    Absolute joke of a sentence.

Tin hat on time Tone but there is a correlation between cutting youth services to the bone and having a policy of trying to reduce crime in teenage years. It's not the full answer, but cutting public services has had a detrimental effect on all parts of society. As I've explained in a previous post a lot of these 'feral youth' have been dragged up by the seat of their pants and have no leadership in their lives. This is prevalent to the crash the other night. Lack of family structure is a big problem in society as is a nanny state that allows these kids to walk around undisciplined.

Honestly Trev, you are talking absolute nonsense.

Social workers perform vital roles in the fields of:
    Child Protection
    Adoption
    Mental Health
    Learning Disabilities
    Older People

If you believe that social workers simply invent problems to solve with these groups then you are living in La La Land. Problems abound and are getting worse and more numerous because of the collapsing state of the economy and public services.
Who do you think should help all these people, if not social workers? As someone once said, 'If social workers didn't exist, we'd have to invent them'.

I can only assume that you have had some kind of bad experience with a social worker that has led you to make generalised, erroneous assumptions about what most actually do. Either that, or you have absolutely no clue about what they do and are simply making stuff up.

After reading this thread spent some time on the T&A reading... Then stupidly on Facebook. Theres people sticking up for the lads that stole the van. Bradford really does have its share of nobheads. Really sad for both lads in the taxi that have had their lives stollen for no reason.

There are plenty of ways to show how upset you are at society without stealing a van and killing people.

Yep, “4:51pm The sentences are maximum sentences I can pass on you for these offences”.
Don't blame the Judge, the Jury, the Court, the Police.
An Act of Parliament passes law, ‘An Act is a Bill that has been approved by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and been given Royal Assent by the Monarch. Taken together, Acts of Parliament make up what is known as Statute Law in the UK’.
This Government, who suggest they are the party of law and order, have now been in power for 12 years.
They have a lot to answer for.

Look we have had the present Government in power for 12 years.

The nominal party of ‘Law and Order’. Priti Patel as the Home Secretary for 3 years!

Fact the number of Police Officers was at its highest level under the last Labour Governement in 2010.

    upload_2022-9-1_22-51-54.png

Fact the number of criminal cases coming to court was higher when the last Government was in power. The backlog has grown during the 12 years this Government has been in power.

    https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-8372/CBP-8372.pdf

The CPS — the principal prosecuting authority for England and Wales — has seen its budget reduced by 25% since 2010, with staff numbers down by almost 2,500 over the period.

Your last sentence is totally unjustified and devoid of anything in your post to back it up.

You could argue that the present Governement has deliberately reduced the numbers of Police, CPS staff and courts and created a huge mess, so that knee jerk unsubstantiated comments, can be made. The people who usually suffer the most level of crime often come from the poorer sections of society.

    You're simply wrong.

The Sentencing Council which is part of the Dept of Justice is responsible for criminal sentencing and provides guidelines to the courts on sentencing for most crimes. Courts are expected to sentence within the Sentencing Council's guidelines. It's chaired by a former Lord Chief Justice, has other senior judges including another Chief Justice and two Appeal Court judges in its membership along with a couple of QCs, a couple of lower court judges, an Assistant Commissioner from the Met, an MP and a couple of others with knowledge of the criminal processes. To say that this is a committee of social workers isn't even close to the truth.

    Dreadful story.

Imagine getting a taxi home and that happens, you and the driver.

    No words for it.

    Nobody wins, absolutely nobody.

As I understand it, the police did not follow the van when the 15 year old driver drove the wrong way round the roundabout and headed north on the southbound carriageway of the M606.

The parents are far from blameless in this. Which kind of parents don't give too hoots about where their 15 year old son is on a weekday night at 10.45pm.

Karma would mean the 3 in the van would be the ones who are dead, but no it's a hard working chef and taxi driver.

Stealing the van is probably like stealing someones livelyhood too. Whoevers van it was it is likely they are a man/woman of trade and their business is an after thought to an adrenaline rush. Scumbags.

Parental Responsibility is a legal concept (and a moral one).
Parents have a duty to develop an understanding of right and wrong, to control their children and provide a childhood which nurtures their kids so that they can grow up to behave in a respectful and appropriate manner.
The kid is the headline, but the parent(s) should shoulder a hell of a lot of responsibility.

Unfortunately on release going straight back into what he did before. This lad was a walking timebomb, no role model from an early age and surrounded by crime as though it was the norm. There are thousands of kids just like him that are brought up knowing nothing but a life tagged to criminality. I know how and why he had the skills to steal a vehicle and why that wasn't wrong to him. We as a society have gone soft on crime, that we pass the blame to others, this in turn has created a generation of youth who clearly have no respect for anyone or anything. And when we have liars and criminals in the top echelons on society what hope is there at the bottom when crime is gloryfied to a point where it does actually pay?

We have been soft on crime for years with the result of huge increases. Take a sentence of life imprisonment you will probably serve 7 to 10 years. All sentences reduced by half. Only half of crimes fully investigated and the police themselves saying there is only 5% chance of being caught. We have allowed the do gooders and social left wing to allow the country to think crime is normal

OK, come then - which professionals exactly could do the job that social workers do in mental health? Or in Learning disabilities? Or in older people's services?
Be specific. If you're saying that social workers are unnecessary in these fields, tell us exactly who else can replace the work that SWs do and what credentials they have to do it.

And what exactly is this higher level experience that you have of managing and funding social work? Because from where I'm sitting it sounds like you have very little idea of what most social workers actually do and why their role is both essential and different from (eg) nurses and doctors.
