And there in lies the problem. To get winning again and look like we are heading in the right direction we need quality players, but we can't attract those quality players until we start winning again and look like we're heading in the right direction.......

We know we're not going to be signing any talent so let's start being realistic.

    Announce Alfie Beestin!

There's no evidence that Tshimanga is good enough for L2 football yet though.

We could have just another dud from non league on our hands.

When it comes to transfers and strikers we are utterly horrific. Every so often we get lucky but in the main we persistently chase journeymen and never dare to speculate.

And we could also unearth a gem. Lets be honest, our recent approach of signing shite from the championship and crap that lower league clubs release hasnt worked in the main.

I agree but unfortunately don't think we have a big club CEO. So even if we have sufficient funds I think Sparks inexperience may cost us in situations like this

But then if we carry this logic through we'd never have signed Charlie Wyke cos he could have been a dud. There was no evidence then that Wyke was good enough for league 1.

I would have signed Tshimanga, but we can't just assume he would be worth 500k by now.

I bet they'll want something in that ball park. They paid a rumored 150K plus add ons for him 6 months ago. Wigan and Sunderland both looking for a striker too, both linked to Cole Stockton and Morecambe have publicly slapped a 500K price tag on him. Given Tshimanga is more a finisher than Stockton and has an insane record over the last few years, i wouldn't be surprised if Chesterfield just try hold out for a bid of that amount.

Wyke was ok but he couldn't lick the boots of many City centre forwards that came before him over the years...

The price tag is more on the assumption that he did well making the step up, as Omar Bogle did when he came up with Grimsby.

It’s no guarantee but I’d rather scout players like him who are clearly on an upward trajectory than a Sean Scannell proven championship player on the way down. Imagine if Leicester never took a chance on Jamie Vardy, clubs simply have to take a risk unless you can throw millions more than your competitors at players you know are certs. We aren’t in that position.

It’s unlikely he’d have been anymore a dud for us than the 3 names I mentioned were.

Why can't we assume? It's the same scenario as Charlie Wyke, he was wanted and we speculated with £250,000, it would have been more if it weren't for a clause in his contract. Fact is strikers are the most saleable commodity in football and Tshimanga is one of those.

Gonna take more than 1/2 million to secure the top scorer in league 1.

Well because he might have been totally useless. If he'd been good, as @WilsdenBantam@WilsdenBantam mentions, then sure.

But if he'd scored 5 goals and been employed as a sub, he'd be worth about 50k.

Charlie Wyke is a good example of what we should be doing - a guy who plays well and earns a profit is a perfect signing.

I'm not sure why Rupp - who benefitted from the Wyke signing and sale - is suddenly so averse to speculating on promising players, but we also can't just assume they would all work out.

    Not according to Morecambe.

    They're genuinely asking for 500k.

Of course we can but not by paying them in magic beans.

Down at this level as little as an extra £500 a week swings it but we're seemingly not even set up to clear the first hurdle, never mind get to the stage where we can stretch an offer slightly.

Over the last 30 years like Windass, Blake and Wells. We had a lot of other good centre forwards but would you say he couldn't lick the boots of say Hanson? Mills was good for a season or two (very good in that time) but hardly on another level completely

Seriously? I liked Wyke, but Lee Mills was several classes better - great in the air, good shot with both feet and held the ball up beautifully. He was operating at the top of what is now the Championship and would have been fine in the PL had he not fallen out with Jagger. It was a dark day when we let him go and replaced him with Ashley 'I can fall over faster than you' Ward.

I havent mentioned assuming they would all work out, that's why it's speculation. And any speculation comes with a risk, if it didn't everyone would do it. The whole point of my posts are if you don't speculate then you'll never know if it would work. Tshimanga was worth a speculative bid when scoring at Boreham Wood, the credit must go to Chesterfield for taking what was risky punt. Now he's shown it wasn't a one off the risk is lesser but the 'speculation' now comes at a higher price. Same with Cole Stockton, its having the balls to pull the trigger when there is an unknown factor involved.
