I think it has previously been referred to on here, but the main problem seems to be that all the emphasis is on preventing the other team playing/scoring. The mentality of the midfield is all wrong, we are always looking for the easy ball, the "keep what we have" ball. Not one of them ever looks up and drives forward, drawing an opponent to him which then releases our forwards into space. If they are being told to play the way they are then that needs to change. If they are playing this way because that is how they want to do it then they need to be instructed to change or changes in personnel need to be made.

Spot on. I think, with the options currently available, we need to replace Reeves or Palmer with Cooke, who will be more willing to get forward. Personally, I'd drop Palmer.

Paul Jewell was a striker and he recruited exciting
strikers and scored lots of goals.

Bowyer was a midfielder and has a load of midfielders,
so many he doesn't seem to know what to do with them.

    Are we missing something?

That's further away from midfield and less knowledge

    another Bowyer......

His dad was a very good midfielder for forest, Ian Bowyer.

Oh for the likes of his dad in midfield, or anyone who is prepared to put his foot in, on paper that looked the strongest starting 11 for some time but for some reason all 11 were poor on the day, and unfortunatly we don't have a Gary Jones to kick ass.

I'll give Bowyer some advice. Stick with whats working despite its limitations. Get us up and we can reevaluate next season. can't change philosophy part way through the season. Parkinson never did. I might not like it but its the best chance of success because the current jigsaw pieces don't fit when tried in different puzzles. Time for a rethink on Doyle.

Don't need to rethink on Doyle at all!

Time to rethink how you press from the start of games.

Time to rethink how you get more bodies into the box.

Time to rethink on Reeves! He keeps taking off around 50-70 min mark so maybe the lad needs a rest and maybe he needs to up his game.

Time to rethink on Palmer who comes back in and offers nothing.

Time to rethink Taylor on the wing. Is it time to give him a run in CM.

Time to rethink on Everton who seems an accident waiting to happen.

Saying rethink on Doyle is just lazy and poor!.. if you can't play football with a 20 plus goalscorer then your management skills have to come into question.

I agree ,he shouldn't bow to fan pressure to play 442. He must decide what formation is best for the players available and if he wants to play 5-3-2 against Scunthorpe which brought him two wins, I admit very boring wins its up to him. After all it's his job on the line. As for Doyle it does nobody any good having a player here who clearly doesn't want to be here. Get the best deal possible from Swindon and use the wage saving to bring a couple in to revitalise our season.

I don't think Bowyer would ever bow to fan pressure, it was his choice to go with 4-4-2 of sorts. A similar style to Parkinson but with a different set of players with completely different attributes. Most noticeable thing for me yesterday was the body language of the players, they looked flat and devoid of confidence, and not for the first time lately. Quite strange for a team challenging for the automatics. I agree with Doyle but not sure what Swindon have to offer. They know full well he's a round peg in a square hole here, we can stamp our feet and demand whatever, but they know him being back here limits us strengthening elsewhere. Bowyer is responsible as he is the manager but these players he puts his trust in need to start repaying that trust.

Burnt our bridges am afraid in the hope of getting decent money from Swindon for Doyle
Yesterday confirmed what they thought that GB has no idea how to play him it significantly weakened our position I fully expect them to lodge a low offer for him and it to accepted before the transfer window closes
It's the way we do things

That display yesterday has got to rank (there a good word to describe it) with the worsted we've played this season, when the team was put out I don't think there would have been many fans who thought we wouldn't give Crawley a good game and take the points, how wrong could we be, from back to front we were second best the big man Palmer gave our two central defenders a lesson in how to play the target man role.
I can't remember either winning many aerial duels, our midfield was all over the place playing balls our lass could have played, can't remember one searching pass from either, Taylor looked lost in the wide position he was asked to play, and the front two had scraps to feed off or go deep and try and get the ball themselves, it was possibly Connolly's least effective game, did he get passed his defender once ?.
There needs to be a clear the air meeting where both sides can voice their opinions on where they think we went wrong and what formation they feel will give us the best results, they have all week to get it sorted, I hope Pritchard is fit but we need all 3 points against Scunthorpe next home game.

    You feeling ok?

How does Doyle being back limit us strengthening elsewhere? Utter nonsense mate.

You not figured out yet that Swindon were trying to get him on the cheap?

I'm sure Bowyer discussed players he wants with Rhodes hence Taylor signing a new contract after we recalled Doyle.

    Seriously mate!

Midfielders who don’t create and don’t score - that is the root of our problems. We need to ship Doyle on to anyone that wants him and replace with some genuine steel in our weak midfield, we don’t appear to have any leaders there.

We'll see. No point in having a certain type of player if you can't utilise him properly.

Which player is suiting Bowyer though? Name one?

The problem is Bowyer not the players. I hate for us to get rid of players then only have players that suit negative football.

Agree we need to at least one but preferably two good midfielders so they can supply Doyle and Vaughan.

He is the manager and he picks the formation/system, many have criticised his formations in the past as negative yet they have produced results and got points on the door, so I would be disappointed if as you say he bowed to fan power, I personally thought that team were good enough to not merely play that formation but to bring points back to Valley Parade.
We were very poor first half but once again he left it until the 60th minute to change things, in all honesty he could have changed it at half time in those 15 minutes after half time we did nothing different to what we all saw during the first half. How many times have fans posted on here and C&B over the years they would rather be positive and give it a good rather than play it the same way, Christ we were 2 - 0 down and looking to concede most times Crawley attacked, could those extra 15 minutes or so made any difference we'll never know, but in all fairness would the subs he made have been less detrimental to the lacklustered performance.

This. Its not that the players we have aren't capable to a point in their own right, its that together as a squad we lack certain pieces that would bring them together. The right ingredients aren't always available and in our case when attacking it shows. I very much doubt Jake Reeves wants to spend the afternoon passing sideways and backwards, or that James Vaughan wants to chase lost causes for 90 minutes. In football like any sport you play to your strengths.. And at this moment that is being a team thats hard to beat. Try and accommodate something else and you end up with your strong points looking decidedly shaky, our normally solid defence could have conceded 5 or 6 quite easily yesterday. If we want a different approach, be prepared its gonna take different players than what we've got.
