    Who is going to take them?

    Donaldson will retire at the end of the season, so no rush to go anywhere.

    Zeli I wonder if they could assess his medical ability to fulfill his contract? I seriously think his playing career at any level may well be at an end.

    Guthrie is an injured/none scoring striker. Who would give him a contract?

    Motley-Henry again I doubt he has a future in the EFL, beyond his current contract.

    Richards-Everton might appeal to some, if he was playing as a centre half, but seems to be beaten too easily in a back three.

    Anthony O’Connor is relatively cultured as a defender, but switches off and doesn’t seem to put in many challenges.

    Pritchard, could potentially be a forceful forward midfielder, but would need to be in a team, where the others are probably technically more superior.

    Again who is going to take them?

    If Zeli was forced to retire could the club actually clame some compo via insurance?
    Is this a cunning plan?

    Clubs have a duty of care to injured players, even after their contract has expired. If Zeli is injured for the next 2-3 months then he won’t be going anywhere.

    We'll pay some off. Others will try and get an 18 month contract elsewhere. The last thing they would want is to be unemployed following our relegation. Who would take them then?

    Paying them off would have to come from the £1.5 million salary budget. If we pay them off, then we may save on appearance money and other bonuses, but I would guess 80% of their salary would be a core wage, with no strings attached.
    The issue is finding enough money within the £1.5 million limit, to get additional players in, and having a maximum number of 22 senior professionals.

    FourFourtwo article suggests severance money doesn't come out of the salary cap.

    Yep, transfer fees or contract termination payments dont come out of the cap space. From EFL site, below is the criteria when calculating the cap spend.
    • Basic Wages;

    • Taxes;

    • Bonuses;

    • Image rights;

    • Agents’ fees
    Also says they allow a 5% overrun depend on circumstance. If a clubs 0.1-5% overrun is deemed unnecessary by the EFL or if a team goes over the 5% anyway, the total in pounds that they have gone over the £1.5mil cap will be the fine the club will receive from the EFL. The squad registration for the salary cap has a change for next season, same budget but clubs will only be allowed to register 20 players over the age of 21, where as in this seasons cap you can register 22 players.

    I agree with most of that, with the exception of BRE.
    Beldon Sports are after a centre-half, he may just get a shirt there, if not, he could always run the line for the ref ..

    Talking of talent-less players we have, spare a thought for this lad-

    Sherwin Seedorf (what u cant remember him) currently a regular for Motherwell and in todays transfer gossip on bbc sport both Reading and Stoke are interested in him!
    Bizarre.
    In a couple of years time no doubt Oteh and Samuels will be sought after yet City never get the best of them :sob:

    Just reading on bbc sport page about Greg Halford who played and scored for Southend last night.36 years old not played for 18 months.Signed at half 6 yesterday scored in a 3-1 over Grimsby 3 hours later and playing for NOTHING.Said he put word out and trained at Grimsby before signing for Southend.Not saying he would have come to us as he is an Essex native but it shows the myth around out of contract players and fitness is exactly that- a myth.There are decent players out there.You just have to be prepared to do the work and go and find them.Might even get one for nowt.Southend did.

    I'm amazed that we haven't tapped into the free agent market. We should have done it back in Oct and if we had, Stuart may well still be in a job.

    Not quite the full story - He started training pre-season with Northampton and continued training full time - the training with Grimsby was for a week whilst they had a look at him. He has been training at Southend for a few weeks and had to wait to sign until Southends tranfer embargo was lifted.

    Stuart let himself down with his comments with regards to free agents, he must have known Guthrie was long term and Novak would be several weeks, surely if not fully fit they would have been fit enough for the last 20/25 minutes.

    Jim O'Brien & Paul Caddis were both free agents when we signed them and not keeping both was a massive mistake.
