I remember in 1983 and 1984 signing a young reject from Coventry then another reject from Coventry followed by signing a defender from Halifax town. We were skint then but Greg Abbott, John Hendrie and Dave Evans didn’t turn out too bad. It’s all about trusting the manager and his recruiting team.

And what changed just after Christmas?

    The manager.

Could it be that we had a few players, such as Vernam (and Watt), who, with the benefit of being properly coached, showed the ability they have...?

    Pre-Hughes, we were monumentally mismanaged

You do realise he's not actually injury prone and just had a bad 12 months at VP?

The two seasons before that he played 36 and 41 games.

Suggests a change in tack, and a deliberate shift to younger players with development and resale potential. Delighted with that, and I've been calling for it for the last 4 years. The trick will be whether we've scouted well and chosen the best targets. But that applies to every signing you make.

I think we want more energy and pace in the team too, which I also welcome. We were far too pedestrian last season.

Good to see we've protected a potential asset with a long deal. Happy with this one, primarily because we've gone in the opposite direction from the likes of Robinson, Elliot, Lavery and Delfouneso.

My god we have some right miserable negative sods on here.
Yes we should be performing better than we are playing wise, but we have had more positive news in the past few months than we have had in years.
Lets see where we are when the squad is assembled and Hughes has worked his magic. It has to be better than the past few years.

    Finally!

Good signing and a far better body to have up front than the likes of Robinson etc.

3 year deal and given his age if he does really well we could make a few quid off this

Indeed. Obviously some crossed wires in terms of his contracted status.

Anyhoo, I think this could prove to be shrewd business and a bit of long long term thinking, and good scouting by the club. Its the sort of deal we don't usually do, which I think is a positive given our recruitment performance over the last few years!

I'm glad they are going down this route so far in their recruitment instead of last gasp signing of journeymen such as Theo Robinson.

Same could be said of the signing of Harry Lewis

He's not had bad injuries in the past and looked very lively in pre-season games, sometimes there nothing you can do when a player gets a bad injury, maybe Derek Adams regime with regards training didn't help, seems strange once Sparkie came in players were said to be in-front with regards returning to where we originally thought they would be,
I don't understand your "We were stupid enough to sign him" comment he didn't get any game time until the last game of the season were Sparkie put him on for the last 20 minutes, I'll certainly not judge him on that.

If you are not optimistic at the beginning of a season then there is little point in being a fan. It’s true of course realism often sets in pretty Quickly but that’s sport

Hughes has already explained that Young isn't performing in training so if it isn't then he shouldn't in the squad. I never understand why just because a manager doesn't do what the fans what it makes them stubborn.
I think a lot of people have selective memory of Young's performances and blocking out performances where he did nothing

I like Young. I fully accept that he is sloppy at times resulting in giving the ball away. What I don’t understand is “why. not” When your back is to the wall and you can’t score, why persist? With the same players, starters and bench? Young might score a goal and has proved he can pop up out of nowhere and score. What if he doesn’t score? Well then you are no worse off than before. I genuinely don’t understand.

Better to find talent before they cost a fortune than paying over the odds. Let’s hope the judgement and the scouting is up to standard

You forgot the third young reject from Coventry. Martin Singleton. He was class.

Did you just laugh at the thread for going off on a tangent, then start discussing Vernam?

All the while being told we wouldn't accept mediocrity. I ain't forgiving the powers that be for the last 5 years of mediocrity just because we won the last three games of the season. Rupp and Sparks owe us big time, it's about time they started to reward the loyalty of the fans of this great club. It's the reason I ain't wetting myself with excitement yet at our close season signings. I'll wait till I see exactly what squad is assembled and how they perform before jerking off.

I get the guarded/cautious mentality some adopt but consider me a half-full type of fan too.

we were excited about Adams taking over 12 months ago but the key difference is that we’ve already seen Hughes in action.

We’ve seen how the football improved, we’ve seen how the results picked up when key players were back from injury. We saw the defensive unit improve. We’ve seen him speak so well in the media.

We’ve had a taster basically, and now he’s got a chance to make his stamp on the squad.

Negativity and talk of Rupp out won’t do anyone any favours. If it gets to August and we recruit as badly as last year then fair enough, he deserves some stick, but he’s allowed Gent to be brought in, we’ve signed off new recruits early and we’ve launched dirt cheap season tickets (at a difficult time for people with the energy and fuel price rises). Cheer up lads and lasses.

Look at the crowd that turned up for the final game of the season. City fans are behind Hughes and the club. You are pissing in the wind expecting Rupp to go anywhere.

I like Young - all the goals he's scored for us have been excellent in their own right and he seems to make something out of nothing.

I also agree with Hughes though, his general play is a bit sloppy and he does lose the ball in some poor areas due to bad decision making or just not releasing the ball quick enough. He's also not great at the defensive side of things but wasn't helped by Hughes playing him at LWB a few times in the pizza cup.

He is a player we need to persist with, because if he tidies up the easier parts of his game, he could be an excellent player.
