Should scrap the whole thing. Vanity project. Complete waste of money and unwarranted destruction of the environment.
The idea that shaving 20 minutes off the journey time to Leeds and Manchester is going to revitalise the northern economy is laughable. If it did anything it would be to further increase the concentration of economic growth in those two, already dominant, cities, to the detriment of the rest of the north.
It's much more likely to encourage more long distance communing to London than getting firms to move northwards.
Improving the pathetic east-west rail links in the north would be a much more useful use of public money.

The travel infrastructure in the North of England should be seen as an embarrassment for a supposed major economic power in the world. I see better when I regualrly go to the likes of Poland. Anyone remember 'the Northern Powerhouse'? But hey at least London gets a news shiny train set to play with. On top of all the other train sets they've got. Leeds is the biggest City in Europe without an integrated transport system and Bradford is the ugly boil on the arse of Leeds that Government wants to pretend doesn't exist.

I recall somebody commenting just before final approval to HS2 was given. He said he had doubts about whether the links north of Birmingham would ever get built. Whatever the merits of HS2 (my own view is that it's a very expensive white elephant), he said that the only way to guarantee HS2 in its entrirety was to start building in a north-south direction. In that way, it would guarantee the final link (Brum to London) being built to complete the entire project! He was right; his name was Osborne

The whole thing isn't needed. I get the benefits of funding massive infrastructure projects and the trainlines in this country are pretty bad but by the time it's completed the technology will likely be obsolete anyway.

It needs to be revolutionary and cutting edge or it should be shelved. England isn't big enough where cutting 20 minutes off a journey is a bog deal.

I was never a fan of HS2; I always regarded it as an expensive vanity project with no real purpose other than to cut a few minutes off travel into London for those (like me I might add) who need it for business reasons. Better to reinforce the parts of the network which are overcrowded, underprovided or simply shit for the benefit of many and to increase broadband capacity for better comms without the need for as much business travel.

No doubt the PM will today announce lots of money going into local networks (most of which will be 'old' money) with some half arsed promise that the extension of HS2 to the parts of the morth will be looked at again. It will be full of promises with little genuine substance.

Levelling up? It will be spun as happening now with more to come whilst everybody with any sense really understands it was simply a rouse to get more northern voters to back the PM. And despite the hard evidence, rather than the fluffy promises, many will continue to fall for it.

This is what people get for handing the least trustworthy politician in living memory an 80 seat majority.

They can be as serious as they like but you and I know The Greens will never be a party that the electorate would vote for imagine these two in the cabinet swampy and his fellow tree hugger [IMG]

The likes of India and China won't be reducing their use of coal in the near future they have made that clear, Brazil will continue with deforestation, our contribution will be minute compared with the worlds developing countries, not sure voting Green would make much difference.
My generation along with many others payed the last of our payment to America to finish the debt we owed them with regards the munitions they supplied us during the second world war on 29 December 2006, I'm sure you're glad the British had the balls to call the Nazis's out and go to war or the likes of you and me wouldn't be having this exchange of opinions, as you correctly state, in light of those who came before us.

    Have a listen to this
and the lyrics "every generation blames the one before", its not unique to your generation.

They got their northern votes now they proceed with taking a full dump on us. As they have always done!!

Anyone with a right mind could see the Northern Powerhouse was just a way to get votes. Torys dont care for the north. They bloody harried it. Im glad I never voted for them... the shame.

Might as well stick a fork in Bradford, its done. With the most pathetic rail service in the country and a road network that can regualrly see you take an hour to get, for example, from Apperley Bridge to South Bradford what exactly is the point of the place from a business point of view? I guess Bradford never gets to see the 21st century of travel.

Hopefully, the EU debate is done and dusted. I voted to stay in the EU but agreed, that the vote was upheld. I'm hoping 1 day that I see the benefits of ending our EU membership....

To the next GE and hopefully the general public will look at the election in terms of health/social care, schooling, the economy, rising prices but depressed income, corruption /sleaze, levelling up of the North etc,

Moreover, I can but only hope we have a party in opposition ready for parliament.

Of course your correct, "it was an idea which is allowed in a democracy" trouble is once again the Brexiteers lumped on the Tories and your second referendum went down the plug hole.
Its not that difficult to grasp you have three options one vote Lib/Dem and you get a democratic vote quashed but you being a man of honour you would never want a democratic vote annulling would you.
Then there was the Labour party who also didn't want to accept the referendum vote and wanted to renegotiate a deal with the EU and then ask you to vote against it, you see why any self respecting democrat could not accept either offer, so only the one left, and not merely did the Brexiteers get the Tories over the line but gave then an 80+ seat majority which even after all the sh!te we've seen will still see them in power after the next General election, certainly the way Labour are performing there is little alternative.

Both Labour and the Tories have a lot in common mainly they look after friends and the wealthy no matter what they promise. My old grandad ( who was a Labour man ) used to say to me that the trouble with Labour is that when it is their turn to bat in cricket they bat for the other side, He was right then and is right now, The nearest Labour has ever been to support the working classes was under Blair and the left got rid of him.
