Reports on GB News that the route from Birmingham to Leeds will be cancelled and HS2 will now finish in Birmingham

Seen that and it's shocking if true. The transport infrastructure in this country is laughable, especially the ancient relic of the railways and typical that the North once again will be treat with distain by Westminster. Whatever happened to the Northern powerhouse?

Should scrap the whole thing. Vanity project. Complete waste of money and unwarranted destruction of the environment.
The idea that shaving 20 minutes off the journey time to Leeds and Manchester is going to revitalise the northern economy is laughable. If it did anything it would be to further increase the concentration of economic growth in those two, already dominant, cities, to the detriment of the rest of the north.
It's much more likely to encourage more long distance communing to London than getting firms to move northwards.
Improving the pathetic east-west rail links in the north would be a much more useful use of public money.

I recall somebody commenting just before final approval to HS2 was given. He said he had doubts about whether the links north of Birmingham would ever get built. Whatever the merits of HS2 (my own view is that it's a very expensive white elephant), he said that the only way to guarantee HS2 in its entrirety was to start building in a north-south direction. In that way, it would guarantee the final link (Brum to London) being built to complete the entire project! He was right; his name was Osborne

The whole thing isn't needed. I get the benefits of funding massive infrastructure projects and the trainlines in this country are pretty bad but by the time it's completed the technology will likely be obsolete anyway.

It needs to be revolutionary and cutting edge or it should be shelved. England isn't big enough where cutting 20 minutes off a journey is a bog deal.

HS2 was actually slower than the one the French are scrapping for a faster train,

Watch them cancel it and then announce another multi billion transport link for London

Looks like they are lying with regards the North South divide and leveling up who'd have thought it.

Which isn't needed, though from a personal point of view I welcome the increase in property values it seems to attract.

They got their northern votes now they proceed with taking a full dump on us. As they have always done!!

Anyone with a right mind could see the Northern Powerhouse was just a way to get votes. Torys dont care for the north. They bloody harried it. Im glad I never voted for them... the shame.

So today we find out what scraps are left on the table for the North of England after the South has taken its usual share of the treasury pot. Let's see what Johnson really means by 'levelling up.'

I was never a fan of HS2; I always regarded it as an expensive vanity project with no real purpose other than to cut a few minutes off travel into London for those (like me I might add) who need it for business reasons. Better to reinforce the parts of the network which are overcrowded, underprovided or simply shit for the benefit of many and to increase broadband capacity for better comms without the need for as much business travel.

No doubt the PM will today announce lots of money going into local networks (most of which will be 'old' money) with some half arsed promise that the extension of HS2 to the parts of the morth will be looked at again. It will be full of promises with little genuine substance.

Levelling up? It will be spun as happening now with more to come whilst everybody with any sense really understands it was simply a rouse to get more northern voters to back the PM. And despite the hard evidence, rather than the fluffy promises, many will continue to fall for it.

The travel infrastructure in the North of England should be seen as an embarrassment for a supposed major economic power in the world. I see better when I regualrly go to the likes of Poland. Anyone remember 'the Northern Powerhouse'? But hey at least London gets a news shiny train set to play with. On top of all the other train sets they've got. Leeds is the biggest City in Europe without an integrated transport system and Bradford is the ugly boil on the arse of Leeds that Government wants to pretend doesn't exist.

There you have it - for another generation Bradford will be an offshoot of Leeds. Tory scum.

Might as well stick a fork in Bradford, its done. With the most pathetic rail service in the country and a road network that can regualrly see you take an hour to get, for example, from Apperley Bridge to South Bradford what exactly is the point of the place from a business point of view? I guess Bradford never gets to see the 21st century of travel.
