When strikers are tired they tend to be less clinical in their finishing and Novak had run around for 90 minutes on a very heavy pitch. The more I watch the goal and the more I think about it, the better it becomes.

 

Tbh might be good if it's off.

Gives Stuart the whole week to work with the team.

As a northerner myself I confess to finding it strange that several people have expressed a desire for the match to be off. One of the great strengths of the English game is we play in all kinds of conditions.

 

What about the devastating floods that have ruined many lives. No hype there just peoples livlihoods ruined. Again especially in Hebden Bridge

 

I just called at the ground. Told by stewards outside that there is indeed a pitch inspection at 6pm.
Strange that they haven't put that on the club website, so people can delay setting off until it's clear whether the game is on.

It’s a disgrace we didn’t sign any midfielders last month. The three of Reeves, Akpan and McCarten are absolutely terrible. Bottlers. Clueless.

So far, Guthrie’s making me nostalgic for Omari Partrick.

 

The knives are out for Akpan tonight bizarrely as he is no where near our worst player. Whos bright idea was it to sign Guthrie.. What a terrible player he is.

 

Hopefully the summer will see a big change in personnel and investment in the pitch. I thought the score line flattered us a little and again there wasn't that much between the sides. Major rebuilding work needed at the end of the season cos that squad is terrible.

 

Well that was really poor stuff. First half was diabolical, second was slightly better but still so much wrong with this current side.

Said it on saturday and will say it again, but a two man midfield does not work with this group of players. The space stevenage had at times in the midfield was ridiculous and a better side would've punished us for it.

Guthrie is absolute shite. Lazy and shit is not a good combination. How have we managed to have three strikers on our books, none of whom can play together? Novak anonymous but good goal nonetheless.

Biggest issue is the lack of composure when in possession. We're so scared and hesitant its unreal. It's going to take Stuart a long while to change that unfortunately.

McCartan had a good second half. Seems to be playing the Law role and got more comfortable as the game wore on. No surprise he gets his goals from central positions when he's given the freedom to move infield and allowing Wood space to deliver out wide.

Special mention to stevenage who were one of the worst, if not the worst, side I've ever seen.

 

Made more tackles then Akpan and covered more ground - did you decide not to go to watch the game at VP Ford?

 

Misplaced passes, bottling (pretty tame) challenges, and playing at jogging pace won't endear him to Stuart - just like it hasn't endeared him to fans for the past couple of years.

Said before, I'll say it again, Akpan is an indoctrinated loser - he's been relegated three times in a row, and puts in performances that would barely stand out in a relegation threatened team in League Two.

It's a long, long time since Akpan was considered a Championship level player. Unfortunately his career trajectory with Burton, then signing for Bradford City at the wrong time have crippled him mentally.

For me, he'd be best off signing for a good National League side and chasing promotion as a key player.

 

He gave the ball away in dangerous areas so many times tonight.

Paradoxically that could have been a good thing. Now SM knows what Akpan is capable of and unless injuries kick in Akpan should never wear a city shirt again for me. I cannot recall one game I have personally witnessed where he has managed a decent overall performance.

 

Woods IMHO is a quality player.

 

Even accepting the mitigating circumstances around the squad from the previous regime and the fact he had little available budget to work with, Bowyer left this team in a right mess. Worst football i've had the displeasure of watching, a lopsided squad that can't even do the basics. Couple that with a woefully underplanned January transfer window and its clear McCall has a serious job on his hands. Fact we weren't great last night against the worst team in professional football but it was a fair size improvement second half shows just how low we had dropped. 4 points from 2 games with this lot is a major achievement at the moment.

 

Paudie looked excellent at the end of last season but hasn't convinced when he's played this year. BRE started the season really well but has massively lost form . Watching him lollop forward is like watching a giraffe try play football. Don't think either him or AOC were comfortable in a back 3 / 5 either.

Perhaps Paudie will come back in from the cold. Think he's got potential but his progress has stalled this year. That said there's probably only Connor Wood who can really hold his head up high this year
