That's the problem. He thinks we're missing players but we're not.
We're missing a system for defending. We started with 3 at the back (mainly because of poor recruitment) and have now switched to 4 at the back BUT they don't defend as a unit and because we either play with a midfield 2 or 3 in front of the defensive line (depending on the formation) then the midfielders aren't sure if they should be sitting back or pushing on, which space they should be occupying and how to interact with the defense.
Then we're missing a plan for attacking and scoring. Is it Clarke behind a front two as a diamond or is it wide players like Wood or Hosannah or is it a 4-3-3 type thing with Hosannah pushed right up front.
Look, some of the players are not good enough such as DMH but put Pritchard or Scales or Staunton or Wood or Hosannah into a system that is structured, well organised, and doesn't change every five minutes and they'll be ok.
The problem is the manager is not coaching the defensive unit as a unit (because we had no right back until 2 days before the season started) and he's not clear on what our attacking plan is. He needs to stick with a formation and coach the players to do what he wants but it doesn't look like he can. This team doesn't have the on-field intelligence and organisation of a Jones or a Law or a Darby so the players need to be told what to do and he doesn't know how to do it.
End of rant. Sorry....TheNorf, How and bailiff bridge bantam like this. -
Bennett, a free agent on a short term contract (the scorer today....sorry!!!), has been absolutely fantastic and holds the whole back line together, why on earth a bigger club hasn't come in for him I will never know. And Hayden couldn't get a sniff under the old manager (Pressley), Beech played him from the first minute from his first game in charge and now I believe bigger clubs are already starting to take note.
Happy times a Brunton Park (for a change) it wont last for of course, but I'm certainly enjoying it whilst it does.
And 'consistency'?, well picking the same team and keeps playing the same system helps a lot in my opinion, something Keith Curle and Steven Pressley (ex Managers) could never understand.Biker, YungNath and JonButterfield like this. -
As far as 'turning it around' is concerned, I honestly think we have a good coach who knows the lower divisions inside out. He doesn't fanny around with this bloody stupid 'playing out from the back', he doesn't unnecessarily change the team or the style, or the tactics, (Curle and Pressley were absolute sods for 'changing it around', 'keeping players fresh', absolute bollocks in my opinion). But where I really think he hits the sweet spot, is his recruitment. He seems to have got, not only decent players, but players that fit into a system that he wants to play, and he plays players that play in their favoured positions and doesn't 'experiment' with players playing out of position, and probably one of the biggest assets he doesn't worry too much about the opposition. -
Tell you what else really raised my blood pressure yesterday, that I've just remembered.
We made Omari Patrick, a player who was probably thought of in the same esteem as DMH when he was here, look like a really good player.
Similarly with Danny Devine, very average whilst he was City. Looked better than anyone in the City midfield yesterday.
What is it with this club, why do players consistently underperform when on City's books. Then go elsewhere and look much improved? What in God's name do we do to them exactly?
You watch, Guthrie and Ismael will be released in January. One will go on to break some sort of half season scoring record for who he moves to. And the other will play 23 consecutive games for his next club.
I'm beginning to wonder if at some point we've been cursed by a gypsy or something?borderlescott, Ponty City and pns1945 like this. -

If we do not get something from this game then he has to go and I doubt he will walk so it’s left to see if Mr Sparks has the minerals to correctly lead this football club.

I'm liking twitter at the moment with people saying we should smash Carlisle as they have Riley, Devine and Patrick.
Well, not only would I swap league positions but I'd also swap all 3 for their replacements in French, Sutton and Guthrie/DMH.How and Ollylondonbantam like this. -
