City have announced that from next season the players will wear their heritage number on their shirts (as do test cricket teams)
This is very laudable but I hope they at least check the list produced on the Bantams Heritage site which is somewhat inaccurate
This claims that 1274 players have turned out for the club in competitive games (excluding wartime) which is two short of the true number 1276
As the Heritage list also claims Eric Nixon had two debuts (758 and 863) and also David Brightwell (852 and 861) this means 4 have been ignored Mike Guy, Andrew Burton, Mel Gwinnett and Martin Pattison
There are also a number of debut issues (most notably McFarland) and perhaps a difference in accounting for players who came on as a substitute on their debut (I go alphabetically even if another player starts the same match on his debut)
My list for the current squad would therefore be

    Devine 1206
    McCarten 1229
    Patrick. 1230
    Reeves 1232
    Gibson 1238
    Robinson 1240
    Staunton 1243
    Akpan 1251
    O’Conner 1255
    O’Donnell 1256
    Riley 1258
    Scannell 1259
    Wright 1261
    Wood 1264
    Goldthorpe 1269

Maybe but if the club are going ahead with this they should care enough to put correct numbers on the shirts

Have you contacted the owner of the Bantams Heritage website about this?

    Hi BWWB. Thanks for this.

Just for some background, the BH project has taken 18 months, juggled alongside a hectic day job and done all for free. I’m very proud of it but accept there will be errors as I’m barely 30 and my history of the club going back beyond 1995 was non-existent before starting this, so please let me look into it.

What I will say is that the project was cast aside as an irrelevance by a certain former chairman who knew football, and thus it went onto the back burner. It came back into prominence very quickly in the last few weeks but I guarantee that by the time those players wear their numbers for the first time in August, they WILL be correct.

Please feel free to DM the @BantamsHeritage@BantamsHeritage Twitter account with any mistakes you think you spot in future.

One thing; I accept some people may disagree with the process of alphabetical order over start/sub in terms of handing some numbers out, but that’s the way I decided to do it and it’s sticking that way! I hope it doesn’t upset too many people.

I notified the owner of the site when he first announced it to the world but his reply was an arrogant I’ll check that out but obviously decided to ignore me

Lets hope that a well mannered discussion can occur, irrespective of the past.

Better to look forwards than the past?

I don't know how or even if this could be done, but I would be interested in knowing who is on your list, just to compare with mine. I also have 1274 players for us, including the four you note have been omitted from the BH list. Who are the two others, I wonder?

I know there was confusion in some sources that split Steve O'Leary into two separate players, and back in 1993 some sources had a Glegg playing in an FA Cup match, but that had to be some sort of error as that name appears nowhere else.

It seems there are quite a few of us keeping detailed records of City's history!

It would be great to meet up and have a coffee in that case to compare and try and produce something definitive!

You could always start a new count up thread:

Number 1 - Are we all agreed it was John Beckram?

This could take a while. ;)

That it would, but it'll have to wait until I'm back over, sometime around late August/early September -- I'm an ex-pat living in Canada.

Please check your personal messages / conversations shortly.

Martin Pattison defo played - he was in a crop of youngsters taken on YTS forms from Queensbury Celtic, including my brother. Think Martin played in the Oldham cup game at home? Would have to check but think that was it.

Yes, he had one appearance for us -- it was in the Simod Cup match against Chelsea, 30.11.88.

..which would explain the confusion here. My system only includes the following: league, League Cup, FA Cup, Football League Trophy (but not its forerunner, considered by many to be a different tournament, the Football League Group Cup) and European football.

It was a decision taken with a heavy heart to exclude other tournaments like the Simod Cup, but I just felt if you were including that, you could include a whole host of random, now-defunct tournaments going all the way back to 1903. There had to be a line somewhere - and Wartime football fell on that side of the line too, owing to the sheer number of guest players that appeared.

Good idea, I know some will disagree, but I like the idea of players having an individual number that identifies each player who has played for City, and it will be their number forever and their shirt. Hopefully it will instil some pride!! I will leave it to those that like to keep stats as to which number belongs to which player, that is definitely not my expertise;)

I hope it is sewn in gold thread, small and discreet. Maybe the collar?

I don't think it's any great secret for me to reveal that it's going to be in small numbering placed underneath the badge. Colour to be determined I believe! :)
