Ever have one of those moments when you think you're good, and then life just gives you a good solid attitude-adjusting slap?

Amongst other things I have been occupying myself with the gentlemanly pursuit of genealogical research. Thanks to the efforts of many family members over many years, we can trace some of our lines back 400 years, into the 1600s. Not bad, I think smugly to myself, as I look at the 500+ page book I have compiled of these lines.

Then I am reminded of the Queen's (and by extension, her descendants') ancestry. We can go back to Robert the Bruce in the 1200s, admittedly not directly, but still with the blood, given that George I and Anne were 2nd cousins. Or we can follow another line, and go directly back to Alfred the Great in the later 800s. But he was descended from a king of Kent, who married the sister of the Jutish King Alward, of the Isle of Wight, who died in AD 686.

I know there are families who can traces their lines back to the times of William the Conqueror, but to go back so many hundreds of years further -- there can't be many.

The mind boggles, to think of this kind of history, and tradition.

William the Conqueror married Matilda of Flanders. Not sure how the Queen can trace her lineage back to the Anglo Saxons.

I know there are many different opinions with regards our Queens passing but I must take a minute to say it was an honour to be amongst Bradford City fans last night, not only was the minutes silence impeccable but the City following were in great voice singing "God Save Our King" .

The case for the other side. I'm becoming increasingly hacked off with this idea propagated by the media that 'the whole country is in mourning'. It's not. There's a very sizeable minority who either don't give a toss or actively dislike the prolonged period of mass hand-wringing. Yes, it was reasonable to honour the Queen's memory last Friday and, obviously, on the day of her funeral. But the blanket overkill coverage has now become ridiculous.

BBC have a dedicated news channel they should restrict any coverage to that

 

We live in a society where you have to be seen to be mourning. Thats why some of our fans wander round with 56 hoodies on.

 

On another note, Centre parks scored a massive own goal by announcing all their parks would be closed on Monday because they put what they thought the public opinion was over the interest of their own guests and quite rightly were hit with a backlash from people who were staying there on those days.

 

Centre Parks obviously misjudged public opinion no doubt swayed by the over powerful media
Not everyone believes/agrees with everything they see on TV or do they !!!!

 

I just can not work out how those making the decision thought it would work without people complaining

Well done Rangers FC, Banned by EUFA from playing the National Anthem in respect to the deceased Queen before the game they ignored it and went ahead and played it as a mark of respect, well Done Rangers

 

Celtic are away to St Mirren on Sunday, based on the banner they had for yesterdays game and their previous record for minutes silence it's a shame St Mirren's efforts to hold a minute silence will be in vain.
