Neither bother me particularly although on balance I prefer the term 'citizen' since it avoids any suggestion of subservience or hierarchy - not that I'm naive enough to suggest there isn't a societal hierarchy! But it suggests a more egalitarian or meritocratic outlook rather than the touching the forlock overtones of being a subject of the crown or the monarch. If ever we do choose to adopt a different process for appointing our Head of State then the concept of being a citizen is reinforced, not that I have any personal attachment to republicanism.

You out do yourself every single time you post. Some people wonder how the fascism ever came into being, then there are people like you.

If i apply the same argument as you then there are countries where people with a lax interpretation of politics arent allowed to vote. You should count yourself lucky you do.

Your definition is not correct. You subject someone to your will. The subject is one who is considered controlled or ruled by a person or entity. It harks back to an age where kings and queens viewed themselves as being ordained by God. King Charles I was famous for naming the people his subjects in his final speech on the gallows. He believed he was ordained to rule over us, his subjects and was put to the axe. So it definitely does have connotations of subservience. Its not a very enlightenment way of going about viewing yourself. But that just depends on how you see things.

When the Soviets started referring to you as 'citizen,' then you would have been well-advised to start packing for the gulags, if not preparing for the afterlife. That puts one off that word somewhat!

In general: (Concise OED and Webster's 20th Century (neither online) don't add anything different)

    https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/subject

    Including the two-way relationship:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/subject scroll down also to the 'choose the right synonym' section
    https://www.wordreference.com/definition/subject

So the authorities will classify us as subjects, whether we like it or not (!), and add that we trade allegiance for protection. My definition doesn't seem to be all that wrong after all. And those (especially those) who have taken the Queen's shilling and sworn that oath can testify that allegiance is not a concept to be taken lightly.

It’s people exactly like you why we should bring back mandatory national service, to learn some respect for your King and country.

FFS! What a load of total bollocks. Being opposed to the monarchy is not the same as being "anti-British". I love my country, but not necessarily everything about it, including the monarchy.

This from the man who is a Putin apologist. Good grief
