I think school children, education, retail and working establishments should follow the US and have our national anthem sung loud and proud every morning, stood up with our hands on our hearts.

Imagine how much more motivated we would be for the day and the unity we would all feel, if we all sung God save our King.

As a kid in school back in the 50s/60s there was always a moring assembly, I can't remember if we sung the National Anthem but there certainly was prayers.
IMO the Americans are far more patriotic than us Brits, many homes flying the Stars and Stripes.

Teresa May makes a far better stand up than she ever did as the Prime Minister.

Why is flying a flag more patriotic than not doing so? americans are less modest and more show offs. flag flying is what you should expect from a more simple minded person or people.

Americans are less likely to support paying taxes to help their fellow american. More likely to fear others. Hardly patriotic.

Singing anthems and revering a monarch, flying a flag etc. is arbitrary. Its not true patriotism its just symbolism.

Paying your taxes, supporting the NHS, joining the army, police, fire service, being a nurse, volunteering, are much more valuable forms of patriotism that actually measure a persons worth than flying a flag or joining a 9 mile queue.

Americans love that jingoistic shite. When i was in the states they even had the national anthem for local car shows, it was bizarre seeing someone grab their shirt by the heart and belt out the start spangled banner while watching some old cars drive round a town square.

When I was a kid, the National Anthem was played in cinemas at the end of the night and everyone stood up.

It wouldn't do anyone any harm if kids were taught to sing for their King each day.

In fact, the positives would far outweigh the cons.

Anyone who suggests otherwise is just a Britain-hating extremist.

Perhaps we should take your post and this reply to a separate genealogy thread?

That is impressive. One may speculate -- granted, pointlessly -- that your Viking ancestors and mine, a thousand years ago, may well have joined up for some raids, or more likely, raided each other's cattle and women! I wonder if Norway will ever demand the islands back? The debt hasn't been otherwise repaid, has it.

Back on topic: One way or another, I've watched the important bits of the proceedings: no one does ceremony like we do. It has all been very impressive, and very moving. Shared rituals -- one of the things that bind us together as a nation, and connect our present-day nation/people to our long history.

So a man who fought in Afghanistan but doesnt fly a flag or sing the anthem is less patriotic than a bin man from bradford who flys a flag outside his house?

    OK

    Look at it this way.

Is a man who has had a bradford city season ticket for over 25 years but wears no city shirt and sings no songs less of a city supporter than the 20 year old who has his first season ticket and wears the new shirt and paints his face claret and amber.

The flag waving is just an overt gesture it means nothing else other than look at me im proud give me some attention for it.

You do know how a message board works don't you, posters have different opinions, from what I've seen in America they are proud of the flag and far more buildings and houses fly it, maybe over here were worried about upsetting some.

I’d happily fly the flag if it actually achieved anything, it doesn’t. Virtue signalling nonsense.

I’ve been to America, deepest Georgia, no less. Most of it’s just for show, “Look at my massive flag, fluttering in the wind, it’s bigger than yours, ergo, I’m a better American” is literally the mentality, it’s an obsession and it’s weird.

    Bullshit.
It's possible to be anti-monarchy and against all the jingoistic crap you're proposing without being either extremist or 'Britain-hating'. There's nowhere I'd rather live than Britain, but that doesn't mean I want all that flag waving hoo ha nonsense all the time.
