I swore my Oath of Allegiance as a 16 year old in 1981 prior to joining the Army. It still holds true with me to this day. I appreciate that it is no longer fashionable to support the Monarchy as strongly as it was in days gone by but I am and will remain a supporter.
Fight hard Your Majesty.

The news is disquieting. I hope she recovers and even makes her century, but the combination of a great age, the loss of Philip, and the accumulated stresses of her position might just be too much. With all the family being summoned, it does not look good.
For me, and I suppose, most of us here, she's been the only monarch we've known. She really grew into the position, and took her duties seriously indeed. Mum and Aunt recall how worried she always looked in the early years. They had just graduated as SRNs the previous year, and in 1953 were working at Batley and Staincliffe (Dewsbury) hospitals. They recall all the hoopla, the decorated wards, the coronation on TV... everything and everybody stopped for a while.
She's been a model monarch, and overseen an almost incredible amount of change, socially, politically, technologically, and more. We've been fortunate to have her. I do think Charles will do well, but I hope he gets his chance later rather than sooner.

Well, what a day it was. Moving, magnificent, and as perfectly executed in all its aspects as humans can manage. From the buildings through the rituals to the people involved, a thousand and more years of history on display. A fitting tribute and farewell to one of the greatest women this world has seen. It was hard not to just break down; there was an awful lot of grit in my eyes today. Worst, I suppose, was when the symbols of state were removed from the coffin; that was it, the second Elizabethan age was truly over. The piper playing the Lament at the end, fading into the distance as if a soul ascending, was just superb.
Our Armed Forces did us proud, and perhaps one shouldn't single out any one component for special praise. But still, the Bearer Party deserve it. What a job they had to do, and how well they did do it.
A poster Cold_Collation posted this on Arrse the other day; I couldn't have said it better myself:
"Tomorrow, a lady is laid to rest. Many will say she served her country for 70 years. She didn't. She served it for over 96 and I am bloody proud to have been one of her subjects. I have no objection to being called such; her sense of duty and, indeed, her steadfastness, far outstrip mine.
The ignorant and malevolent will try to paint her as imperialist and colonialist, ignoring the realities of what she - and her husband and consort - achieved across their lives.
We are living in an ugly time, with identarian political agitators determined to define us wholly by skin tone, sexuality or religion. That is, was, not MY Queen's wish and those who trade on 'my' truth, not the truth, are chaff, mere dust on the wind.
I remain unashamed of this country, and of being of this country. We far outstrip others in terms of equity and equality. Everyone here has the opportunity to be an equal and the person who led that, personified that, makes her final journey tomorrow.
I'll put my heels together and drop my head. Because a greatness has passed.
God speed you Ma'am. You were the best of things and shall continue to be so."

"I cannot lead you into battle, I do not give you laws or administer justice," she said during her first televised Christmas address in 1957. "But I can do something else: I can give you my heart and my devotion to these old islands and to all the peoples of our brotherhood of nations." ...
"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong," she said.
And so she did. RIP.

Well we do pomp and ceremony well don't we?
I didn't plan to watch any of it but did and to be honest I am glad I did.
Whatever your take on the Royal Family today was a piece of history.
Not a Royalist by any stretch but to see the military precision of every part of the event today and how everything went like clockwork made me proud to be British.
It's easy to forget that she was a dearly loved Mother and Grandmother etc.

The case for the other side. I'm becoming increasingly hacked off with this idea propagated by the media that 'the whole country is in mourning'. It's not. There's a very sizeable minority who either don't give a toss or actively dislike the prolonged period of mass hand-wringing. Yes, it was reasonable to honour the Queen's memory last Friday and, obviously, on the day of her funeral. But the blanket overkill coverage has now become ridiculous.

So proud of the young coffin bearers, how nervous they must have been and with it being lead lined it must have weighed a ton. Well done boys!

Everyone to there own, when I got up this morning I was not aware the proceedings had started, I made a brew for me and our lass and watch with pride the ceremony of delivering our queen to her final resting place.
No slapping ourselves on the chest our whipping bodies to show how much we loved her no mass weeping, the armed forces and the powers that be did it with dignity and we loved every minute.Dubois, WilsdenBantam, SelbyFan and 4 others like this. -

Watching the TV since arriving back from holiday last week. It's fair to say that nobody does the pomp and ceremony like us and it makes me very proud to be British and thankful for our Monarchy. The idea of becoming a Republican nation would fill me with absolute horror.

"Elizabeth II’s job as queen was imposed on her by an ancient constitution that required no qualification other than that she exist.
Having been appointed, and whatever her private thoughts, she performed her role over an extraordinarily long reign in near-faultless manner, leaving scant ammunition for personal attack from the fiercest opponents of hereditary principle" a life long vocation Rest in Peace Your Majesty.1975citygent, Rcbantam, Chippy and 2 others like this. -
