HGV Class 1 drivers, where there is a shortage as a lot have moved to work for supermarkets & parcel companies who are paying huge signing on fees & bonus amounts. They can’t drive tankers. You need an ADR licence for that (hazmat cargo) These lads & lasses are on top wages. This all blew up because 4 BP stations had to close in the SE due to late deliveries due to driver shortages caused by Covid & staff holidays. BBC Newsnight made a mountain out of molehill and the Panic Buyers did the rest…winkers.

No idea Dave sorry , however I did read a lot of Polish drivers operate in Germany France and Italy because of higher wages. The consensus is very few will come, wether we like it or not. I read earlier that the 300,000 drivers the EU are short are spread throughout 27 member countries. Whereas we have 100,000 shortages on our own. That’s an a massive imbalance, if we consider the population total of the 27 member states (450million ) compared to our 66 million? We have a quarter of the vacancies yet have a tiny proportion of the population pool?. Huge discrepancy?

As much as some would like to put all this down to Brexit are we actually saying the 100,000 we are short are all EU drivers who have gone back to their homes in Poland etc.
If they came over here and were EU nationals they could apply to stay I'm given to believe if they filled the relevant paper work in.
We have to look at the employers and what they are paying for a job what Id class a skilled job, drivers away many days and night during the week, not seeing their families etc I'd want a bloody good salary for working under those sort of conditions, we need to realise cheap labour is not a good thing either in short or long term.

You can keep Egypt mate, I love a good city break to Spanish cities. Madrid, Saville, Cadiz take your pick. Sun, beer, tapas. Not a beach in site.

As soon as things open up a bit more we are off the either San Sebastian or santander.

I was in Peterborough last week shopping , and still an awful lot of EU Nationals about the place, so that’s one area still represented and obviously many have applied for leave to remain. The rest of Lincs and Norfolk it’s a desert!
Local farms have little staff, fields are rammed out with pigs….with no gaurantee they can go for slaughter and butchering ..it’s sad to see Dave.
Yet, yet, we still have 1.5 million unemployed. I can’t work it out, I really cannot.
Where have the staff gone and what caused it?

No one can say why other than to suggest “it’s nothing to do with Brexit”. Funny that, it’s not Brexit but no response as to the reason.

Why, if I knew I may understand. Very very few of the police shortages we see , 70,000 at the last count, were EU nationals, so what is the reason for the missing police. Not Brexit, clearly!
70,000 doctors and nurses short……. Why?

It a massive list we need to fill that is getting larger by the day. Yet we only have 1.5 million unemployed. Something doesn’t add up does it.

You can keep your tapas, but I'll take the beers, everyone to their own, nothing better IMO that wall to wall sun from the minute you rise till around 5/6pm depending on the time of year.

If you remember there was a lot of disharmony in Peterborough as many Polish made that there home, again as my comment with regards crops based in Peterborough they are near to the farming industry in Lincolnshire.
Before Covid I believe the country had the best employment figures since they were on record, maybe the British don't think picking fruit is the job they want to do, rather take benefits.
Unfortunately that was the Tory government cutting jobs during the days of austerity, you remember those days when Dodgy Dave was telling us all at every opportunity "were all in it together"

Which Newsnight was that please? . I watch it religiously as it’s the only news I watch.
I am happy to download it from IPlayer if you advise what night it was last week.

I thought Grant Shapps mentioned panic buying of fuel first on Thurday?

Newsnight did mention 100,000 HGV driver shortages , which the government freely acknowledge. But which presenter mentioned tanker drivers. Islam, Barnet, Wark or Maitliss, they did last weeks 5 shows from memory.

    tnx

At lunchtime, the Government were reported to have said, ‘The army will not be called in to ease the petrol crisis, a cabinet minister has said, as the government staged an emergency meeting to discuss the option’. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/fuel-crisis-army-george-eustice-b1927576.html
In the last couple of hours, “Boris Johnson has ordered the army to remain on standby to help fuel reach petrol stations hit by panic buying, as Keir Starmer and businesses called on him to get a grip on the shortages rippling across the economy.

No 10 said army drivers would be ready to help deliver petrol and diesel on a short-term basis, but stopped short of an immediate deployment, even though some essential workers have not been able to carry out their jobs without fuel”. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiwtqiCj6DzAhUvRUEAHVGRCFwQFnoECBIQAQ&url=https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/27/boris-johnson-army-standby-fuel-supply-crisis&usg=AOvVaw1sVo3PsLzg_RbJgIHm7beu

    This lot ………..:D

Meanwhile the situation is starting to effect matches, ‘At least 23 non-league football matches have been called off due to fuel shortages stopping players and staff from being able to travel’. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/non-league-games-cancelled-as-fuel-crisis-hits-football-hm3fllff6

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

At least four petrol stations in Keighley had fuel yesterday if you didn't mind queuing

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, the one outbound near Maccies and the Morrisons at Crosshills all had petrol (and diesel). I went to Sainsburys and the queue was very sensible in that it had gone round the corner rather than across the lights. Around a ten minute wait and all very orderly. No pushing in.

Farm work is seasonal and scattered around the country/county. Not ideal work for people with families. Ideal work for young people working here to save for a house back home, improve their English, broaden their horizons, see new places.

It's not all about lazy doleys who don't want to work.

My other half has just arrived home after visiting the petrol station when nearly on empty.

She said it was such an emotional experience, she couldn't help but start filling up! :)

Don’t knock turning left as you get on the plane Bronco, if you can afford or work are paying it’s great. Evening meal and a few drinks in the lungs in LA, get on the plane, take off, couple more drinks and fold the bed out, wake up over Ireland for breakfasts
