Well I've just got back from a nightmare of a night.

I went out at midnight, queued for 9 hours at the petrol station.

It was only when I got to the front of the queue, I remembered I drive an electric car.

As a hgv driver the main reasons drivers are leaving the job is you are treated like the scum of the earth at alot of companies. At distribution centres if you are late by as little as 15 mins you can get turned away for missing your booking slot, at alot of companies, not all, you only get paid for your driving hours not waiting times. Often you get refused when you ask if you can use the toilets, which is a great feeling knowing you are lower than a dog having to piss or worse at the side of the road, if you make a mistake with your driving hours you can get fined heavily or possibly jailed If the offence is deemed serious enough, also the cpc courses which in alot of cases you have to pay for yourself, all for in some cases a wage which is very little above the national minimum wage

300,000 HGV drivers in the country working in other jobs because the pay and conditions are that bad, 10 hour days and 6 day weeks with 3 nights away with little facilities parked in laybys with no security food or toilet facilities having to guard it through the night because of theft you are liable for and all this for £10 an hour. It is no surprise as other better jobs are available they are leaving,

Crisis?, what crisis. There is no fuel shortage. The driver shortage has whipped up the media to cause the panic buying we saw yesterday and probably over the weekend.

It will be back to normal at the pumps within days.

Another great example of how social media can whip up the masses into a frenzy. @Bigrod@Bigrod, maybe you should rethink the wording you have used in your post.

HGV Class 1 drivers, where there is a shortage as a lot have moved to work for supermarkets & parcel companies who are paying huge signing on fees & bonus amounts. They can’t drive tankers. You need an ADR licence for that (hazmat cargo) These lads & lasses are on top wages. This all blew up because 4 BP stations had to close in the SE due to late deliveries due to driver shortages caused by Covid & staff holidays. BBC Newsnight made a mountain out of molehill and the Panic Buyers did the rest…winkers.

My other half has just arrived home after visiting the petrol station when nearly on empty.

She said it was such an emotional experience, she couldn't help but start filling up! :)

Just to reassure anyone travelling today, that as long as you have deep pockets the motorway service stations appear to have plenty of fuel (I drove up from London last night).

There is no fuel shortage. People queuing into the road for over an hour isn't normal behaviour, it's idiots being manipulated by the media.

When demand is artificially increased by 400% then what is in place to deal with a sane world will be put into trouble.

The extent to which human behaviour can be manipulated by the media is mind boggling.

We're just not that evolved as a species, are we?

Sorry, but many people have journeys they have to make and need petrol. My partner is the primary carer for her mum, which means around 100 miles a week without any unforeseen visits. She also has to drive to work twice a week which is around 80, public transport is not viable.

We've made sure we have enough petrol now for the next two weeks. There will be hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions) with similar commitments that need to have fuel.

We are the sixth biggest economy in the world, we c should not be having this discussion.

Strikes me that there are several contributing factors:
    • Covid. The pandemic has lead to changes in society as a whole.
    • Brexit. This has lead to many EU nationals leaving. Many feel unwanted.
    • HGV licence test. Delays in processing new drivers, Covid, and potentially the system.
    • The Haulage Industry. Failure to look at the recruitment retention issue.
    • Consumers. Want everything ‘cheaper than chips’. Retailers look to cut costs. Pay less for drivers, salary/income drop.
    • The nature of the job. More long haul, often working away for several days. Not family friendly.
    • Society and its view on lorry drivers, not held in esteem.
    • Lack of resources. Secure Overnight parking compounds with basic facilities such as showers/toilets. Some of this is down to Local Authorities.
    • The Government. Over the last 10+ years, have relied on a ‘market forces’ philosophy, rather than taking responsibility in strategic planning. Sometimes supply chain, (and many other employment areas) require government intervention, it outweighs the ‘profit’ at all (any) costs mantra.
    • Us. We tend to look at society from our own perspective, rather than realising that it is far more complex than we think.

Also you can get paid more per hour if you want to stack shelves in a supermarket, after spending alot of money to get qualified to drive a 44 tonne killing machine
