Just go for Bingley 5 rise locks straight away. Best to go in feet first. The worst that could happen would be that you'd experience a very expensive version of a log flume but in a barge.

In all seriousness, i reckon it'd be great but then i am biased and would take all the fishing gear. Shropshire Union Canal would be my first choice I think, i know for certain there are plenty of pubs with moorings as it winds through the countryside.

    Evening.

I've never done it but am hooked (scuse the pun) on a couple of YouTube channels.

Search for 'Cruising the Cut' & 'Robbie Cumming'. The first is an ex journo who decided to pack work in & live on a boat & the 2nd is a guy who works and 'cruises' at the same time.

The first is a bit of a how-to guide, the 2nd a travelogue of the various places he gets to.

I've never 'done' a lock but having watched these I feel quite the expert...

Did a stag do on a barge once, around Coventry.

Sounds grim, but actually it was superb. It is pretty rural, and we found some really good pubs along the way.

Pottering along at about 5 miles an hour, seeing countryside and drinking beer. What's not to like?

These sound a bit (really) dodgy on reflection but trust me.

    It's the civilised way, innit.

Loved the Rick Stein series where he biated through France supping plenty of wine on the way.

Done Sutton lock on the river derwent yrs ago with my folks, still remember it, quite nerve wracking for my parents i suspect. But that was the only one. I think you are right, it'd be good fun and a very different holiday. You will get shown as well, to be hoped they don't just give you the keys and say 'on you go m8'...

There's a new BBC series out soon with Paul Whitehouse teaching Bob Mortimer how to fish. Bet it's entertaining.

Once got invited by a 'mate' to spend a day on his barge. Travelled from Skipton to East Martin and back. Used me to open and close the lock gates and believe me there are a lot of them on that route!

Hired a day cruise barge from pennine cruisers in Skipton, will make change annoying anglers from the water rather than from my bike.

Excuse the repost but as any angler will tell you, never shy away from letting the world see your best work. Redfish, illegal (oversized) had to be put back. Caught off Pensacola Beach pier 4 years ago. Now, if only I can upload it!
Reduced size to 350 kB but still giving error message when trying to upload, any answers?

Top man, look forward to it. I shall do the same next time i get out trout or pike fishing. The wee highland trout might be a bit smaller than what you catch though.
