Fans Back At VP - A Plan

Denmark has been allowing crowds of up to around 30% for about 2 months. This has seen clubs like Copenhagen see gates over 7000. They had a slight rise in new cases as the pandemic took hold of Eastern Europe in June and July, and as western europe relaxed restrictions, but that is fading now and new cases have fallen for the last two weeks. It seemed to have had no effect on death rates - they continue at an extremely low level of around only 1 every 3 days. If their summer "wave 2" only produced a modest increase in cases and no increase in deaths, one wonders why they have not lifted crowd limits further.

France has been allowing crowds of up to 5k for about 2 months. They have had a huge rise in new cases over the last 8 weeks from 500 to over 5k per day yet deaths have only risen from 9 or 10 to 13 or 14 per day, which is still a very low level for a country of that size. Covid hospital admissions were only up marginally and total numbers in hospital were actually still falling slightly as of Aug 21st. (See 13.3)

So that's two similar countries similar to us that notably have allowed modest crowds for a couple of months or more but have seen little change in hospital activity and deaths, despite varying rises in new cases reported. It has to be said rises in new cases is partly down to considerably increased testing. (In the last two months Danish testing has roughly doubled and France roughly trebled.)

I'd suggest this means the UK should not be too worried about the effects of restarting sports with spaced crowds. If rises in people getting seriously ill in Denmark and France are none to marginal after two months since the restart of sport with crowds, then it suggests we will not have a sudden rise in people getting ill and, if there is one at all, there will be plenty of time to consider what action to take.

You may be allowed back into VP but, the locals will ensure that a full lockdown happens before you have seen 3 games IMO.
