How much do those electric chargers cost to install?

I’ll be holding out for as long as possible until switching, though the government are doing their best to bully people :-(

Bullying HoW? I blame the obese drunken oaf for 99% of the problems in this country but I’ll let him have a free pass on this one.

I did it out of choice and now reaping the rewards. £2,500 Grant off the car price and £250 grant off the charger installation is bullying?? ( Both since pulled/ reduced)

Public chargers 40-60 pence per KW/ h charging
HOME charging currently 5p per KW/h on Octopus Go. ( Goes up to 7.5p in July)
Approx 1.5p a mile to drive 260 miles in summer and 2.5p per mile in winter
Home Smart car charger cost me £650 for “ life”
Plug in, go to bed, get up car good for another 250 miles this morning.

Petrol around 190p per Litre here…….

I can’t be bothered to do the sums but when Petrol was about £1.20 it was about 15-18 p per mile

No Road tax to pay currently, insurance is cheaper than my old ICE vehicle costing £10k less.

No bullying going on whatsoever. oh and 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds tears 95% of ice road vehicles apart in performance.

What isn’t to like…it’s common sense in reality for my needs and probably 75% of all motorists.

Hope the figures explain, but I do hold every single charge record/ cost for the 14 months of ownership and it’s pretty scary how cheap it is to run, especially now the petrol and diesel prices have gone skywards, and will remain so I believe for evermore.

We looked at getting a charger fitted but our only off street parking is at bottom of our garden so would have had to lay electric cables full length of garden. That meant it was ‘non-standard’ so couldn’t get grants etc, this may have changed since.

It's the future of motoring keV, unfortunately for myself and people in my situation it's simply unaffordable. I do wish I had a job with the salary to pay for one though, I'd say new as we don't know enough about the second hand market of these yet. Does anyone know what a life span of the batteries is on an EV? I know the Tesla batteries are horrendously expensive to replace.

Our garage is on the opposite side of the road. I looked at having electricity laid on and it was over £4,000 (VAT Extra?) about 25 years ago.

That's my concern... batteries on some tesla cars are up to 18k to replace

When looking at used teslas it tells you how many years of life left in the battery

Who's gonna buy a used car knowing in a few years it'd an arm and a leg to replace the batteries

Also my mate has a new Fpace jag, went to a campsite for great North run and there's literally one charging point nr by

She gets there and someone's using it already.. fortunately he's still around and they arrange to meet in 6 hrs when his cars charged

What a ball ache and what if had been 3 cars waiting... someone wasn't getting home next day

And thats not to mention disposing of batteries down the line

What happens if you 'over charge'. Isn't the issue with anything rechargeable that the battery never charges up 100% after the first, ie charges 99.9% of its previous charge level, meaning eventually it won't charge at all ?

I can see problems in the future whenever they get to a point where they have millions of cars charging every day. Once the mass market of EV sales is achieved there'll be charges added to compensate for the lack of tax revenue on petrol and diesel. And all those millions of batteries? I read somewhere what mining has to be done to extract the minerals for these batteries and it's quite eye opening.
An ever growing world population and the need to commute in modern life has created long term problems that will bite the world on the arse down the line. As a planet we should be looking to reduce energy consumption not increase it.

Not everyone has 50k for an EV with decent range and charging times though.
When the cost of electric vehicles come down , more people will buy them but then the government will have to find new stealth tax when then can’t add 50% to a litre of petrol.

My car was no where near £50k. Not even remotely. Please don’t try and slant the debate on a wild guess.

The.ironic thing with EVs is they benefit folk who have more disposable income than others they are pretty much out of reach for the working class. And most working class folk live in places where charging will always be a problem such as old housing stock.and appartments.

That's the obvious way for now

Mate has a plug in hybrid and will do 40 miles on a charge

Gets him to work and back for around 40p

Totally agree. We use public transport to go into the Manchester City centre. I have looked again at getting the train to Bradford, when going over to watch City. It will add two and a half hours to my journey! I still have a three mile drive to and from the station, or wait and catch bus which would add probably another forty minutes.
When I go to City, I use the opportunity to visit family in Baildon, they live a fair distance from the station and that would add in another two legs to the journey, so probably three and a half hours extra travel time.
It isn't practical from my perspective.

I suspect this will become a major issue very shortly if we continue on the current track to net zero. The Treasury are already looking at how the gap in Govt taxes can be filled when petrol taxes and VAT reduce and have to be replaced with something else. It raises about £30bn every year from taxes on petrol. The Govt is also looking at where the power would come from to charge 30-40million batteries every night! A further couple of Chinese funded, French built nuclear power stations may be the order of the day! And that's before the two or three more to power the air sourced heat pumps we'll all need to heat our homes.

Eventually this will all need to see the light of day but there seems to be a reluctance for our Govt to even start the discussions with the great unwashed who will be paying for it. I don't recall any of this being even mentioned at COP26. The Govt has its head firmly lodged in the sand on this.

I bet it was £20k + though wasn't it? Try affording that on £9.50 an hour. As usual, there is great savings to be had.... If you already have money

I looked at an MG one that was on offer and that was over £20k. With the way work is these days I couldn't commit to the payments on that size of purchase.
