It's hard to believe at times. My m-i-law has stocked up on these very things - anti-bacterial this, anti-bacterial that - despite being told that they are a waste of money. The clue is in their name - anti-bacterial, ie they combat bacteria and are of no use against a virus! My m-i-l had already been told this by her grandson (who is a medical researcher) but thought she'd still buy them anyway 'cos 'you can't be too sure with germs'. And she won't be alone with this mindset. The only good thing to come out of it was by mistake she bought a hand cleanser with a high alcohol content. Unbelievable Jeff!

Flippin eck, that is one expensive City to booze in, last year even utter dives were wanting big money for a pint, hopefully Spoons will wobble that cartel. I bought fish and chips for my me & my lad, way out of the tourist area, £22 take away!

The virus and handwashing, you need 20-30 seconds with soap and warm water, the virus cannot survive that, hand gel should/could augment the hand washing, not be instead of it.

Has that been proven about the virus? Just wash your hands?

    Nothing having that.

Hate it when a quality post gets ignored. Miserable buggers.

I read it today, virus's have "hard" and "soft" outer shells, the C virus is soft, so warm water + soap simply washes it away, it can't survive like it can on hard surfaces. :)

Don't want to ambush the thread but if it survives on hard surfaces then my mrs is knackered.

What you're getting at? I haven't mentioned any of that. I was just merely pointing out what an expert said about why the vast majority of the population shouldn't be concerned.

Possibly crossed wires here but I understand that. You said I was missing the point. The point I was trying to make is yes the vast majority will be fine but for the minority who it will impact it would be devastating. Let’s say it spreads into hospitals and on cancer wards for example.

It will pass and everyone will think why the fuss if it is contained correctly. China were very aggressive with the containment, locking people indoors etc. I don’t think we will do that but we seem slow on the old uptake, imagining everything will just work out but we have to be careful

Not sure where this site pulls its figures from but currently death rate is just over 3.3% of confirmed cases.

just short of 100,000 confirmed case but that is expected to rise next week when US finally roll out testing kits across the country

It would be interesting to get the figures for the likes of Iran and China, but as you say compared with the UK that figure is alarming.

Also my parish church have stopped the sign of peace, hand shake, wine at communion and also recommending people do not receive communion directly in their mouth.

I understand these precautions as the parishioners are an aged demographic. But it shows even the Catholic Church are worried

Your practice isn't Ridge Practice by any chance we got a text through last Thursday saying the same, if you are a Wibsey patient you ring in the morning after 8:15 and your told the doctor will speak with you over the telephone first time in almost two years I had a face to face with my doctor.
You could until recently book an appointment online if you attended Buttershaw or Great Horton Road surgeries but the practice took that privilege away from Wibsey patients.
