Cases have risen since the last easing somewhat, but shouldn’t that be expected as people have more contact with each other? According to the BBC app deaths and hospitalisations continue to fall even though cases have risen, surely that means the vaccines are working, they’re not designed to completely wipe Covid out but to make it mild in those at risk which it looks like it is doing. I hope the government at least wait until 14th June and don’t crap their pants now just because cases have risen.

Agree with both posts I cant see any reason not to allow the next stage to go ahead maybe its just the BBC they enjoy their digs at Boris and the government.

As patients are brought into hospital can they detect which strain it is, and it was saying most hospitlised only had the one jab or none at all.

Yes good news I've just read it, we know weekends are different but low figures should allow more easing.

weekend numbers for deaths are becoming pointless as hospitals have stopped notifying on a weekend and put them all through on the Monday, that include Bradford Teaching hospitals. Some of the nations don’t report deaths every day either. Best to look at the seven day average.
Still not high enough to stop anything but better than looking at one day, Friday was 10

There is still two weeks before they are making the announcement so plenty of time to see if figures do go up much more.

They can only tell which strain if they check the strain but as far as I know it isn’t done for every positive case

There are two factors at play here.

Firstly, there's B.1.1.7 (the 'Kent' variant) which has been the dominant variant across most of the country in recent months. There is little doubt that the numbers of this variant remain low, despite the easing of restrictions.

Then there is B.1.617.2 (the 'Indian' variant) which has taken over as the dominant variant in a few hotspots (Bolton, Blackburn etc.). In the areas where B.1.617.2 is dominant, hospital numbers have been rising noticeably and the vast majority of hospital cases are in their 30s and 40s. This is what is causing concern and the argument being put forward by those proposing to delay step 4 of the roadmap is that a delay of a few weeks is required to allow the vaccine rollout to make significant inroads into this age group and head off a potential surge in hospital cases.

I see little point in having the debate, as to whether or not step 4 should be delayed, today. As @Storck@Storck has mentioned, the decision is scheduled to be announced on 14 June, that's two more weeks to see which way things go. By then it should be a lot clearer as to whether or not a short delay is required.

There is certainly no need to panic, the vaccines are proving extremely effective, even against B.1.67.2 and, as long as a more dangerous mutation does not occur, we remain well on course to be back to near normal by late summer.

Even if the June date is agreed I wouldn’t expect everything to be back to exactly the way it was 24 months ago. I still expect some rules to be in place

Numbers in hospital and numbers on ventilation are at the lowest since middle of September surely that is good enough to relax

Nah, I'm sure they will be able to find some fella in Leicester who has come down with a new fangled quadruple variant from Uzbekistan.

Everybody back inside. Tell your friends you'll see them next year and brush up on your home schooling ladies and gentlemen.

But the third wave, the Indian variant, not everyone has been double jabbed.

I think a double mask rule should be brought in just to be safe.

Just been looking through the usual media suspects home pages, Guardian, BBC, Sun etc.

They were all full off these types of stories this morning "Scientist says, blah, blah blah" doom and gloom type stuff.

They're all become a bit more tricky to find in the last half hour weirdly enough.

And yet if you Google him you struggle to find mention of his excellent work on HIV. Just his doom and gloom on reopening.
