What sort of number would you think given the less than 100% efficency of the vaccine and take up? I actually thought I was being conservative.

For example between 10,000 and 30,000 people die of Flu every year despite around 15m vaccination shots being provided and nobody bats an eyelid. Are we expecting a more dangerous disease to be less deadly in the long term?

I expect a 'fully' vaccinated population to have less COVID deaths than an average flu season. With further refinements of the vaccines, plus improved treatments, that number could fall to 100s or even 10s per annum.

Of course, a lot will depend on vaccine take up (although, at the moment that doesn't seem to be an issue) and it also assumes that a much deadlier and/or vaccine escaping mutation doesn't occur but, as things stand at the moment, the main issue will be adapting to this new normal where, for the forseeable future, we will have to live with COVID.

I struggle to believe this will ever happen.

By 'fully' I mean a high percentage voluntary take up (80 to 90% take up), not compulsory vaccinations.

Watched a bit on TV great turn out but boring IMO.
We have got to get back to normality sooner rather than later, and the figures with regards hospitalisation and deaths should make it sooner.

I honestly think one of the issues is that it doesn’t seem seasonal. With flu we sort of accept it as part of winter but with this dragging all year it is constant news

The problem is that the deaths figure is always about three weeks behind the point of transmission/infection, so it's hard to get a handle on how serious the infection rate actually is. That's why they're waiting as long as possible to decide whether the full opening up can go ahead as planned.
They are clearly concerned at the number of unvaccinated people (and with only one vaccine shot) in their 30s & 40s who are currently being hospitalised, and worried about the NHS being overstretched, putting back the backlog of treatments for other conditions still further. If those hospitalised start dying in significant numbers then I fear the full opening will be delayed. Let's hope it's not as bad as some of the forecasters are predicting.

I keep seeing reports of people being hospitalised and the numbers going up but the total number is still very low, September levels, so if more people are getting admitted they are also not staying long as the total number isn’t going anywhere yet

What are you on about? what is twice as many deaths as flu? Or are you trying to twist my comment to fit something?

Not twisting anything? Just trying to figure out that if flu is seasonal and accepted what are we accepting as an all year round implication of covid? Nothing more than that.

My point was as it will constantly be reported on probably be a lower figure. People forget about flu as it is seasonal

    So flu will be lower?

Not a trick question. Just trying to figure out what you think is a realistic figure.

No, Flu higher as it isn't talked about. Covid will be talked about all year round so they will want to keep figures low

They can wait to keep it low all they like. Bit what is its actual level? There's a balance to be struck so where in reality is it?
