As I posted I very much doubt Bowyer would have been happy with the situation if he didn't think Drury could offer something to the club as part of his backroom staff.
I don't get this assistant/coach comments some are using, Parkinson had Parkin I'm sure he bounced stuff of of him but at the end of the day Parkinson made the calls, just as I believe McCall did with Black, Bowyer will dictate what system he wants to play and Drury will assist, Bowyer has brought several players in during this transfer window I'm sure there will be more to come but it will be Bowyer who dictates what formation we play he will have brought players into the club who can play his way.
We can read what we want into the T&A comments IMO Bowyer has spent money on players rather than enhanced his backroom team, which I believe is the correct way forward.

Back room sorted. Players signed up early. I think there’s an understated professionalism to how we’re gping about things this summer. All good so far.

I'll be different to the general consensus and say I'm quite happy about this. Never been a fan of specialist coaches for the sake of it. We're not playing at a standard where small technical adjustments are likely to make much of a difference. The players will have to take greater responsibility for themselves which is good imo. Most importantly apart from the money saving there will be clarity. The trouble with assistant and specialist coaches is that they all have an opinion. Remember Collins Drury Abbott and Rahic et al all wanting their say/input and the resulting mess they made of it. You can tell Bowyers comfortable working this way and it's reassuring that he has the self confidence to do it. As someone that was fairly critical of Bowyer at the back-end of last season I've been quietly impressed so far this summer.

I just can’t fathom how with a reported budget the size of ours, we couldn’t squeeze an extra amount in for some decent coaching staff to support Bowyer.
If it was a choice of one or the other then you can see why he went for the pitch after how bad we were last season. But I just feel we are letting ourselves down and being short sighted without giving him better supportBoingBoing, Dubai bantam, NorthernMonkey and 1 other person like this. -
Liverpool even have set piece and throw in coaches to get that edge.
I’m not saying we should go that far but this league is not as easy as people make out. Anything we can do to help ourselves we should be doing. It’s a 46 game season, extra bodies around spot things the manager may miss etc. Keep the players on their toes.BoingBoing, NorthernMonkey, Dennis and 1 other person like this. -
With the way Bowyer is being backed - good signings, in early - I struggle to believe the idea that he won't be supported in a similar way with what he believes is genuinely important in terms of backroom staff.
I absolutely believe we'll have a capable fitness coach. We're probably constrained in terms of Drury being his number 2, but if it were a material problem then I think it'd be dealt with.
Its league 2. A number 2 who's capable is important - and that's almost entirely about what Bowyer wants. We've no idea to what extent Drury is a fit for that role. A fitness coach is important. And ideally we'd have a keeper coach.
Bowyer has good scouting contacts too.

How hard can being a fitness coach be in pre-season?

Just too finish off so I don’t start going in circles, I have no doubt if Drury left tomorrow Bowyer would bring his own assistant in.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Tolly856, Onside, Allotment Bantam and 1 other person like this. -
Let’s face it, our set-pieces were awful last season under a plethora of managers. We looked disorganised in defence and our midfield often went missing. This happened all season.
The only consistent part of last season was the coach and that was Drury. So why do we give him a pardon? You say Bowyer won’t be happy if he didn’t accept the position. Simple question is, how do you know he is happy? Read the comments he came out with when Todd left. Read between the lines in the recent T&A article. He’s far from happy, even if he knows he has to suck it up and get on with itStop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand...
