That doesn't stack up to me.

We'll have a budget, obviously, and as with all budgets there'll be a degree by which we can compromise.

I don't buy the idea that Rupp is willing to back Bowyer with a complete squad overhaul, getting players in early, but is imposing a coaching setup on Bowyer that he's not happy with. How much is an Assistant in League 2? Maybe 40-50K? We wouldn't compromise a whole season for that amount. My guess is that Bowyer had a choice between a new number 2, or money for a player. And he'd rather focus on players, which suggests he's happy enough to have Drury in the role.

I just don't see the fuss here. We have to judge our whole approach holistically, and from what I see we're starting our rebuild well.

I think the comments on here are a little disheartening tbh. You also love a good moan don't ya? None of us have any idea if Drury is a capable assistant/coach but most have seemingly made up their minds up.

Bowyer at the very least would have known the situation before hand. If he felt that the backroom staff he's inherited was going to be a major hindrance to him and our chances of success then I doubt he'd even be here. If he's happy , then so am I!

After the shambles of last season I've been happy with the professionalism on and off the pitch this closed season. Let's not throw our toys out of the pram over nothing- there's more to be cheerful about atm than not. Who knows, maybe Bowyer holds Drury in higher regard than some of us think?

Maybe Bowyer has seen something in Drury that he believes he can work with at no extra cost to the club, Bowyer works with Drury on a daily basis so maybe we should except what Bowyer has said in the T&A article.

Exactly. Devine, Anderson, colville are all waste of wages which could've been spent on an assistant, a proper fitness coach and keeper coach.

More worried by this than the signings to be honest. No club can succeed without a proper backroom team.

That is embarrassing by the club.

    A utter disgrace!

So Bowyer has come in and hasn't even brought in his own team?

Plus we're left with a negative from last season in Drury.

    Poor this!

Bowyer seems to know who he wants and how to get them to understand his methods. He chooses players who fit his coaching ideals so, for now,I would think he will mould Drury likewise to gel with his strategy. He also moved position on how long he needs to get things as he wants, from 2 transfer windows to 3.This would assumably include additions or changes to backroom staff. He would not want to jeopardise his progress unreasonably I wouldn't think.

In terms of numbers we are no worse off than when we reached the play offs with Stuart . He only had Kenny black and he lost his fitness coach early in the season and had to reappoint. In an ideal world obviously he would like to have Todd but we don’t live in an ideal world

Well I disagree with both you and BoingBoing, Gary Bowyer is in a position to tell Julian he is not happy with the situation, a mountain out of a mole hill IMO.

I was there yesterday and in the players dining area.

They DON'T share meals with the kids.

They eat in the players own separate dining room which is in its own block.

The food is commissioned by the club based upon the fitness coaches requirements for protein/carbs etc. It comes specially prepared from a nutritional specialist meal provider.

At the school, the coaches, manager and academy staff all have their own separate offices.

The player's area which includes a TV for match analysis and dining/food area is again part of this block and separate to the school.

Next time I'm there, I'll take photos:)

Absolutely bonkers to expect Bowyer to do the job on his own with only Drury to support him. Have we learned nothing from penny pinching over the last 12mths?

I’d have rather we didn’t re-sign Devine and offer Colville another deal and use those funds to pay for Bowyer’s much needed backroom staff. We’re going to regret this

Absolutely. For me this is seriously tin pot. What sort of a professional league club doesn't have an assistant manager? Are we really that broke? Its weird as the signings we have made so far look above average on the whole and don't cry out that were struggling for funds, but the story in the T&A just smacks of cost cutting. I'm totally baffled and its just poor financial planning / setting budgets properly. Id rather have one less player on 1500 quid a week, than not have an assistant manager.

I am sure GB will have input into the discussion and agreed with the decision. Yes I am sure he would want an assistant BUT he knows he has to work with the budget.

Can we have a reality check please? This is the price we have to pay as a club for the Rahic overspending on players who have not lived up to their billing last season.

I honestly think he would rather spend the money on players. If he really insisted on having an assistant he would have one, but for now he has decided to invest in the squad.

We might not like Dreary but guess what GB is ok with him.

Drury is hopeless. Let’s not sugar coat it. He’s only here because Rahic gave him a nice 3 year deal.

    I'd have to agree.

In a perfect world and with an even bigger budget, Drury probably wouldn't be Bowyer's choice as number 2. That doesn't mean that Bowyer is unhappy using him in that role or that the coaching setup isn't fit for purpose. Bowyer seems to be a 'track suit manager'. He'll be very hands on in terms of coaching. As long as we have a fitness coach that knows what they're doing and Bowyer has the support needed to scout opponents, I think we'll be fine.

There are quite a few on here who've clearly formed the opinion that Drury is useless.

Genuine question - on what information are you basing that viewpoint? Do any of you know any detail about his working methods, relationship with Bowyer and the players, etc etc?
Or are you just assuming that, because he was part of the ludicrous shambles set up by Rahic then he must be incompetent?

I have no view about Drury either way because I know the square root of sod all about him. So I'm keen to know, what is the ITK information that condemns him?

The entire set up last season was a joke. I just don't understand how you can pick one person out of an omnishambles and say that they were a 'key part of last season'. Unless you have inside information, how can you possibly know who was and who wasn't mostly to blame. For all we know things might have been even worse without Drury's input.
The short spell as caretaker manager is irrelevant because a) it's not the same role as his current one and b) no one could could get a tune out of last year's squad over weeks or months so it's ludicrous to judge him on one game as stand-in manager.

It just seems to me that all the angst about Drury is no more or less than guesswork. Surely if Bowyer thought he was clueless he'd have made it a condition of signing that he got a replacement.

Nobody is saying that Drury is his first choice, but just maybe he has got to know him and is ok. I really don’t see why we are having this pointless debate. He has made his decision based on the current circumstances. I cannot for the life of me see why every man his dog is sticking their lip out over this decision. We have had nothing but positives vibes and signings coming out of VP since the end of last season. As I have already said when or if he changes his mind, or our financial situation changes then he will bring whoever he wants. He signed a contract recently, and he hasn’t made it part of his contract which tells me he is being flexible, it is a shame the fans can’t support him!
