I certainly agree with that the substitution was criminal coming from a manager with a playing background like him. In fact his whole approach to tactics seem the opposite of the character he had has a player

The substitution will go down in City folklore.
People will remember it in the same way as other landmarks such as Workington 64 (for the oldies), Darlington 69, Wolves 99, Stuart on the car roof, Premier league survival and that bloody substitution at Carlisle 23.

And there's our conundrum. Since losing Wright in January and Chapman to injury, we have nobody good enough to play wide on the left.

If all fit, got to be same side as first leg for me.

“At least we took Carlisle to extra time”

Put that in big letters and put it on the dressing room wall.
That can be our pre match mantra for next season.
If that doesn’t inspire our players,I don’t know what will.

    Speechless.

Always thought it was going to be a big ask. City are a team that have struggled to put two 45 minute performances together all season, never mind 2/3 consecutive games. Disappointed, but it's not unexpected, unfortunately.

We've finished in better position that last season that's for sure. But ultimately Hughes for all his back catalogue has been outthought by Paul Simpson, and that's for all his premiership experience. He never did sort out the midfield problem that at various times through the season made us look pedestrian and lacking in creativity. He will have next season to put right the wrongs that have seen us ultimately fail this season yet again.. An at times alarming lack of pace throughout and a lack of creativity that found the divisions leading top without a chance created over the last few games. That is what cost us promotion, let's see who is let go and who is brought.in, we have a fair few who clearly aren't good enough for a promotion push.

He's been in charge at his club as long as Paul Simpson has been in charge at Carlisle. Both joined in February 2022. Over the two playoff games he has been out thought and outmanaged despite Carlisle having an apparent low budget. It's hard at the moment to forgive him for this, he simply did not turn up for the big game. Something you couldn't accuse Parky of doing. Next season is fully on him, it will be his squad and his backroom staff. The goodwill might be wearing thin if we aren't fighting for the autos.

    Last season;
Stockport we’re in the national league
    Carlisle finished 20th
    Leyton Orient finished 13th
    Stevenage finished 21st

While yes this season was an improvement on others, this idea that its progress is rubbish.
It doesn’t take 2-3 years to build up to promotion. This season has been largely crap. We haven’t played well or consistently at any point. Even our unbeaten runs were unconvincing and when it actually mattered the manager and players proved that they didn’t have the bollocks for it. They crumbled.
Stick your “progress” with every other football cliche going. We are crap and MH is to blame for his turgid football and inability to change a game.

Irrespective of formations or style of play, the absolute bare minimum for a team in League 2 is to have height, physicality and pace.

Height and physicality wise we have absolutely none bar the two centre backs and Cook. And even then, I'd struggle to put Critchlow in that category because he's quite poor in the air. Unfortunately, due to the nature of L2, you've got to have big lads in the key areas of the pitch otherwise you get bullied and lose too many duels (like we do every week).

Pace wise....what pace? Honestly it's like watching a vets game watching this lot play football. We've only got one winger who can go past a man (Banks), none of our strikers can get in behind and our midfield couldn't win a race at the paralympics.

If our summer signings don't all have at least one of these characteristics then Hughes has learnt nothing.

Just got up and the highlights are on Sky. In the cold light of day that extra time substitution is no less baffling. Banks wasn't tired. He set off 3 yds behind the defender and absolutely skinned him over 10 yds. Had he stayed on Carlisle would have been bricking it whenever he got near the ball. Might have left extra men back. It may not have affected the result, but do you know what, it just might have done. Totally baffled. I haven't heard Hughes interview. Did he say he brought Platt on to try and hold on for penlties??

I also think their third goal resulted from uncertainty at the back at so who was picking up who. Chucking Plattv into the mix at that time confused things, leaving an unmarked man. Although to be fair, it was a superb cross.

Yeah, I'm still annoyed with Banks substitution. As @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam said above, our approach was so negative across the two matches.

I would also love to know why Hughes felt he couldn't use Dion Periera at any point across the two games. We were so unbalanced with no threat on the left, surely at some point it would have been worth changing it to give Carlisle something else to think about.

We have seen the approach Hughes adopted in the 2nd leg so many times this season. It should have come as no surprise to watch him do the same again. That's his modus operandi as a tactician.

As he came to terms with how lower league football is played, I kept hoping that he would change his approach. Yes, he tweaked it occasionally but there were no fundamental changes in his approach. Lower league football is played differently to the elite levels where Hughes has gained his experience as both a player and a manager. I don't believe he has grasped that. And if he is leading us again next year where his intention once again will be to get out of this league, I expect no more than how we've succeeded this season. It will be more of the same.

The annoying thing is Inspector, at that point we only needed another goal to go through.
Banks was running them ragged and they were fearful of him, to then sub him for a central defender was criminal and what's worse is that Hughes gave us bs in his post match interview that Banks "was tired".
Bollocks - Hughes' bottle went and he was hanging on for penalties.
Utterly disgraceful, he has to hold his hands up and tell it how it is - on his own shoulders.

Thats a bit rich from Smallwood. My main criticism of our captain is that invariably when he receives the ball facing our own goal he immediately plays it backwards first time to a defender, even when he has space to turn and go. He doesn't even look to see what's on.

I’ll echo Park’s comment too Bry. Your lads played better than ours. Maybe it would have different without “that” substitution but we’ll never know.

And surely I’m not in a minority when I say that visiting supporters on here add to the site ? (In most cases).

Actually winning at home in a play off semi final was a bit of a rarity for us, the way our defence had been playing we knew Carlisle would need 2 goals at least and the way Cook had been sticking the ball in the net we haven't had too many games where we didn't score.
Getting back into the tie so late into the game IMO giving the 11 on the pitch a massive lift, we had 14 minutes left and should have been on the ascendance, we've seen it so many times especially at Valley Parade where we have been in front then the opposition score and we drop deeper and deeper it would have been interesting to see how Carlisle would have responded to that set back but our manager thought differently, so I find it hard to look anywhere else but the dug out and the strange call Hughes made, sorry mate we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.
