The whole point of being a member of the EU was that the decisions made were with agreement from all 27 countries, obviously with the present situation with regards Russian oil situation its not, now if that had been the case when we were in maybe there wouldn't have been a need for brexit, free trade and each member country makes its own calls with regards immigration etc.
The EU don't need my help to look stupid, one minute there won't be an EU army then we see that's what is being planned long term, who makes the call now with regards future decisions will it have to be all 26 countries agreeing or countries go along with whats best for them.

Not all decisions have to be total agreement. Plus just because something is allowed eg Russian oil imports doesn’t mean every county has to buy it. They could just stop. The reason they wanted the agreement was to give them a legal reason to cancel the contracts. Now they have to decide which is more important, refusing to deal with Russia or keeping to their contracts

If that was the case why would they even be bothering trying to talk Hungary round?

Why wouldn't the 26 in favour just do as you say and leave Hungary and the outlier. The fact they aren't - and are having to negotiate with Orbán suggests acting unilaterally isn't quite as easy, or even as possible, as you suggest.

Thats not the whole point of the EU and shows you didnt know what you were voting for.

Maybe some education on the subject would be helpful?

The EU is a collection of nation states. The EU as a collection can show a symbolic front which is more powerful than if done individually. Its not about legality its a gesture a collective bargaining power.

You have to remember that the UK only just left the EU and yet our reliance on Russian oil amounts to a few percent. This shows along with many other areas that unilateralism is and always was possible being a member of the EU. The UK was independent all along but we chose to act as a member of the EU across a whole swathe of areas for our benefit.

The covid vaccines alone show that we could tender our own contracts whilst still being a member which we were at the time. Despite the misrepresentation you see in parliament from your pin up boy Johnson.

I just find it funny that you all still bash the EU instead of speak proudly about your failed project called brexit. Its funny seeing you all ever so paranoid about the reality of the UKs position that you bash the EU to try and level it all off.

WRONG, that s exactly what it's all about protectionism not competition, that's the reason the EU don't want a UK that welcomes investment from the rest of the world the EU like to be in control, but us Brexiteers weren't afraid of the future outside the EU.

I'm not sure he realises we ceased to be a EU member at 11pm on 31 January 2020 we've had vurtually 2 years of a world wide pandemic where making trade deal were still being done, even the remainers on here said new deals would take years to be done yet this guy is asking for results overnight, oh dear.

I think his agenda is far more extensive than brexit, he just argues against and insults everybody with an alternative view...

I haven't bashed the EU? Why go off on a tangent.

That whole post is a rationale as to why EU countries can't actually act unilaterally in practice. They may be able to by the exact terms of the treaties but the intertwined nature and the wish for them to be a collective does put a stop to it.

The simple point is that 26 nation states want to ban Russian oil and haven't yet been able to because the EU wants to act as a single group. There's nothing the slightest bit controversial about that description.

    Brexiteer- Brexiteers

a person or persons who are were favour of the United Kingdom withdrawing from the European Union.

I'd class myself as a Brexiteer along with the other 17m as @Tony Wilkinson@Tony Wilkinson alludes to.
