Let’s chat about Wembley IF and WHEN we get there. A full week to worry and develop plans on how to beat whoever.

The goals against stats are quite damning and still we continue with that particular approach. The corollary is that our defenders are very good at doing their jobs in open play, helped of course by playing a midfielder in a deep defensive position. It's MH's chosen tactic of adopting zonal marking in set plays which is flawed.

To actually get to the playoffs Hughes must be doing something right. But as has been pointed out elsewhere and by some on here i have never really seen us put a team to the sword over 90 minutes. Each formation Hughes has tried has shown that we ultimately didn't have a good enough squad to go up automatically despite the pre season hype. As an attacking unit Andy Cook has pulled us out of the mire in plenty of games, defensively Harry Lewis has shown how a truly decent keeper can make a difference to your season.

I feared a draw tonight so am delighted we won. Any sort of lead to take there is a bonus.

the second half was painful. The HT break subdued the crowd after a noisy first half and Carlisle missed three good headers - one looked a sitter.

osadebe is not a winger, nor a player to bring on to protect a lead.

we need Banks and Walker fit otherwise we’ll struggle.

Crich was MOM tonight and made three or four superb interceptions in the box.

    cook got zero service.

Liam had a great game last night, something I've not heard enough praise for.

I agree on Banks but the size of the pitch at Wembley bothers me. I can't see it suiting our play at all. Maybe we can grind the opposition down with our possession play but when I think of Wembley I think of searching balls down the channel and quick counter attacks suited to pacey outlets. It's just not our game.

    Anyway let's get there first.

I think this match could be a feisty affair I do wish fans wouldn’t wind up our ex players it only gives them extra incentives but there is no love lost. Need to keep good discipline in these sort if matches and keep eleven on the pitch

Yes, a very good article, much of which I agree with.

It's refreshing to read an article which is supported with some hard evidence rather than simply an exchange of a few fans' opinions. It moves the debate on from just saying formation x is better than formation y or tactic 1 is always better than tactic 2 by looking at the outcomes of those decisions in terms of results. Well done WOAP.

Yep all pretty much spot on. I've stated on a couple of other threads that the loss of Chapman has been massive as we dont have an effective direct replacement.
We now have hopefully a 3 game season to play out. MH has got to juggle the pack to find the best solution that will get us over the line. There is nothing to fear in any of the other 3 teams but as the league table shows we are all very closely matched. It will come down to very fine margins and probably who can handle the pressure, so the players in turn need to stand up and be counted when it really matters. Over to you lads!!

After seeing attendance biggest winners tonight were salford getting a quarter of that gate money.

Absolute con with gates they get.

I thought Smallwood had an absolute mare tonight. Kept putting us under pressure with terrible back passes.

I agree with most of that but don't think they will be extremely happy, we start well at their place and score that's some mountain to climb.
I enjoy the referee allowing the game to flow but some of the stuff he let go was baffling, Cook got nothing from the referee even though most challenges he had 2 men marking him one in front and on behind, then he took it into his own hands and stuck it on one of their central defenders dropping him.
What a dick Garner was I thought it would be another Donny when the fat lad Tomlin got sent off, trying all the tricks in the book to old man the referee but he wasn't having any.

Agree Osedebe didn’t start well and was ineffective, almost weak when he replaced Walker on the left. However when Platt and Darbyshire came on and moved more to the centre he looked way more comfortable and when he had to hold the ball up in the corner, did so well.

The left side hole is a challenging one since Chapman got injured. Who knew how much we would miss him? Thought Ridealgh did a very decent job yesterday, whilst often been exposed. Smallwood has come in for criticism however off the ball, and certainly in the first half, I thought he covered the left side really well whilst Walker floated.

Me and my lad have been a few times, long drive and an absolute miserable set of results & performances on the pitch, including the 2 recent Boxing Day trips. Surely our luck has to change soon, on the law of averages!!

Good to know Mellish is banned, he is a very good player to have in your squad. Hopefully Stockport refuse the Barclay loan extension, as they might end up playing them if we fail

Given the fiasco on ticketing for the Carlisle game, I doubt the club will know the rules either! ;)

We have some potential, where is our Hollywood multi millionaire owners.
Surely we are a better option than Wrexham.

It will be interesting to watch the Wrexham story unfold.
I will be amazed if they ever get anywhere near filling a mid 30000's stadium. Not that many places around there and the population is 135,000.
Cardiff 450,000 and Swansea 250,000 populations , Cardiff 31500 last premier season average , Swansea no higher than 21000 and both averaging about 17000 in the championship this year.
I feel its a play thing for the hollywood guys and when they are bored, they will sell up and move on. I could be wrong,
