Just seen this in the T&A.

Bradford City Women's chairman has stood down from his role with immediate effect amid controversy over 'Ban the Burka' posts he shared on Facebook.

Mark Hird, who is an ex-serviceman, only took over the post at the end of last month following the departure of long-standing club stalwart Sally Thackray.

He has departed just weeks into his role, after facing questions into his social media activity, with one concerned fan alerting the Telegraph & Argus to posts he has shared over the last few months.

Several make reference to banning the Burka from Britain, while others claim that Muslims should 'adhere to our laws' and leave if they don't like it.

The angry fan blasted: "I’m absolutely disgusted to check out the new Bradford City Women’s chairman's Facebook page.

"How are our Muslim children meant to carry on playing girls football here? He needs sacking. What a disgrace to our ladies football club.

"We need a chairman that's going to support all races and religions. The club will go to ruin otherwise, I mean it's 2019.

"They have been holding open days at the club throughout this month for new players and there were open trials for the ladies (of all races and religions) yesterday too."

The fan also claimed that Mr Hird had other posts which had been blocked by Facebook, saying she had no idea of the content in there.

She called the whole situation "scary".

After the T&A brought the concerns to the club's attention, a statement was issued on the situation.

In the statement, Matthew Kermode, Bradford City Women's club secretary, said: "Bradford City WFC have accepted the immediate resignation of chairman Mark Hird following recent allegations made against him.

"We would like to go on record as a club that we have a zero tolerance policy towards any kind of negative discrimination, whether it is racist, homophobic or any other form.

"As a result, I will be stepping up from my role as secretary to interim chairman with immediate effect until a suitable replacement is found.

"I will continue to work with our players, coaches, parents, committee and the local community to progress and develop our club in preparation for an exciting new season."

Personally I agree with the comments that it's not acceptable. Like it or not, Bradford is a multicultural city and we should be encouraging young girls and boys to play football regardless of their race or religion. Having a person in a position of authority making comments such as this in a public forum is not helpful and he shouldn't be associated with the football club.

He was very wrong, but this is the society we live in now. The "concerned fan" seems to have seen his appointment and then jumped straight onto his Facebook, presumably looking for something.

That's a generalisation. I actually know quite a few LGBTQ people in Bradford.

I'm not getting into the detail of his views. But when people are losing their jobs because of their political beliefs - as long as they're lawful - then its a slippery slope....

I personally couldn’t care less, the world is a place where everyone is looking to be offended, the fact that ‘someone’ has chosen to search through this persons history to find something to be offended by bemuses me somewhat.
Don’t misunderstand me, i don’t go out of my way to offend people but there will be someone out there that would find some facet of me offensive. Its a fashion these days.
I wonder if the next person to take the role will have their personal lives scrutinised to the last degree to find insult? Because somebody will find something.

Completely agree. Its a slippery slope that we're on. In order to speak and think freely, you have to risk being offensive. Its a different thing to obviously going out of your way to offend as many people as possible.

A very good point. I, like you don’t want to get into his views per se, more of agreeing with both posts you made. The Israel Folau/Australian RU is a prime example of this exact thing. At what point are we allowed to have a viewpoint on a subject.

So if i have a different opinion or viewpoint on something to someone else i get punished for it. Think very carefully about this.

Again - good point. I'm not a religious person. I think a person's sexuality is 'coded' within them. i.e. you're born that way. Its an irrelevance to me, as long as everything is consensual. But his beliefs are driven by religious conviction. Is he not 'free' to think that way? Are his principles less valid that the freedoms of another religions persons beliefs that dictate how they dress? We're trying to police behaviours and its going too far.

I'm not sure it's about just having a different view-point. I think it's more a conflict of interests when you are working for a football club that's operating within such a multicultural city and trying to actively work within these particular communities in Bradford. Some tact should be employed. I believe in freedom of speech, but when your political views go against the aims and ethos of your employer then I think it's right the club has a say and takes action.

I don’t agree with the guy, but when we start to punish people for having an opinion which may offend some people we may as well give up.

Maybe one day someone will create a mind controlling device, then we can all share the same cordial thoughts like nice inoffensive robots.

We are seeing very dangerous precedent being set around the world at this very moment which is actively stopping free thought and opinion. In fact our wonderful houses of parliament have this very problem where they have effectively any discussion or thought around religion that doesn’t follow their ‘rules’.

Can’t agree i’m afraid. He should be allowed an opinion on something and that shouldn’t have had an effect in this instance on his employment.
