Not to take any of the blame away from Taylor because he was truly dreadful, but the more I watch the clip of the sending off, the more angry I get at Smallwood. Firstly there was absolutely no need for him to pass back when he did. We were in the final third, he had space, time and players in front of him yet he chose to be negative and play back. Secondly, watching him stroll arrogantly past Oyegoke as he's walking off is disgraceful. He's the captain ffs, that young lad was put in a position he should never have been put in thanks to Smallwood and then Taylor and although he made a mess of it, he was trying to rectify both of their mistakes. He should have given him the arm round the shoulder and a few words of comfort, not just a quick glance of disgust and off you pop. He's a very poor leader out on the pitch imo but when I look around the squad, I don't really see anyone that could be the inspirational captain that we need, other than possibly Stubbs but even then, I'm not convinced.

He's a leader. Strong defender. Sticks his head in where needed. Good experience. Could be a shrewd signing

I hate to write a player off so soon, but from other fans comments, pre season and today I have no idea why we have signed him. And no idea how he played ahead of Platt, who despite what a few think is a very solid defender at this level. I’m not bothered if a CB can take a throw I want them to defend.

I'm not a fan of Taylor by any means, but I reckon the change in keeper has had quite a bit to do with the turnaround as well.

I tell who I think could become a cult figure if he's given a chance, Kelly. He's a right unit and faster than Stubbs and Platt put together (which I know isn't hard to achieve). I know we've only seem glimpses of him so far but I've liked what I've seen and hopefully, we'll get to see a lot more of him next season.

I don't know why Platt didn't start I could understand it if Taylor possess something Platt doesn't pace, we know what we get from Platt steady away league two defender, surely Taylor didn't get the nod because he has a long throw, early days yet but I did expected a positive result yesterday, if he's fit I would hope our two CD will be Stubbs and Platt at Accrington.

60 games in four seasons. Marvellous. Unless there is a serious upturn in our recruitment we are in for another season of failure

Never heard of the guy, but I shall reserve judgement and give him a chance. Hopefully he adds a bit more of a threat for us from set pieces.

I wouldn't read too much into other fans comments. It's league two he doesn't need to be a world beater, 6'4 so should be very decent in the air, and Scottish premiership experience so should be able to slot in nicely.

Many of our decent centre halfs have come to us with no massive fanfare, and done a solid job for us.

Time will tell, I judge on ability not what other fans of other clubs think. Based on Mansfield fans reports , would you AT THE TIME, said exactly the same about Cookie. YES is the answer! I could trawl similar comments up about him but why waste time proving something we already know is more than true. Halliday is another example. Clayton who came in to do a job is another. People rate Foulds, I don’t, based on what I saw, not based on what others think I should believe.

As I said , time will tell. I don’t prejudge. Like any club, some players make a success of a move, some don’t.

It wasn't so much Taylor being poor on Saturday (he was) it was how Alexander hung them out to dry with the line up he went with. To be fair to Taylor he's more suited to playing against the likes of Matt Smith at Salford. But no, our manager thinks its a great idea to lump our slowest three centre backs together behind two pedestrian paced defensive midfielders. What could possibly go wrong....

I’m not a fan of players getting singled out for pelters, and to be fair to Taylor it’s not like he is the single weak link in this squad.

However I’ve said over and over again this season, a team with Taylor (at this stage in his career) is not getting promoted. Yes he can suit the physical battle against big lumps 1:1, but even league two has become more smart than this nowadays. The moment teams look to hit you with pace, Taylor doesn’t have the positional sense, reading of the game or any sort of pace to manage it. Stubbs and Platt are void of pace also, but both have a better reading of the game than Taylor.

It’s admirable GA plays players on form and what he sees in training. However for me how Taylor continues to play over Platt (Smallwood the same based on the past 5-6 games BTW) is unacceptable.

My take is we need at least 4 CBs in the squad, and given Odusina seems out of favour, we were always going to sign one this window.

Given we have Stubbs and Platt who'll start, we were never going to splash the cash on this position.

He'll bring experience, the potential to chip in with goals, and good cover from the bench, and the option to play in a back 3.

The big wages in the squad will be spent on 1st team positions we actually need aka attacking positions.

    It's a solid signing.

Everyone saying he’s an uninspiring signing, but out of all realistic options, who would you have signed?

With 500 games at L1/L2/SPL level, I don’t see why people are writing him off so quick. Judge him on his performances for us.

Who did you want us to sign? Ramos?

It’s not about having a team full of 11 stars, it’s about having a team that will work well as a team.

Hi folks, still have my account here so just my 2 cents worth on Ash Taylor. Its been a few years since we had him on board but there is quite a lot of disdain for him among fans here. He started off ok and aerially he was decent, chipped in with a few goals etc. But he has the turning circle of a U boat and his lack of mobility was a real issue. More than that he just seems like a bit of an idiot, seems very full of himself and there have been several times he has argued with fans on twitter etc. Whilst I guess there is nothing wrong with that, it just rubs people up the wrong way. When we played you last season your defence were trying to keep the ball and it appeared you were attempting to transition into a more possession based style of play, I dont get how Ash Taylor fits into that at all.

Anyway sometimes players just fit at certain teams, but on this one I fear by the end of the season you will be equally unimpressed. All the best though for the upcoming campain.

Hang on, let me check if I've got this right.

Apparently Taylor is an upgrade on Platt (who has largely been solid) because he's scored a few goals, which ironically has absolutely no correlation to his ability as a defender.

Yet when fans like me question this signing based on the terrible reviews on both his ability and character from not one but three former clubs at this level, its unduly negative and a case of 'give him a chance ffs'?

Forgive me if I'm struggling to understand the double standards here.

Hughes/Gent and Sparks have a lot to prove Bronco - we lack quality, pace, excitement and through no fault of his own Ash doesn’t really deliver on this front.
Hughes in particular has to improve this coming season if he wants to keep his reputation intact - he's had a season and a bit to get in a position to deliver. I am honestly yet to be convinced by him and his ability to really manage - great player and good bloke but that's not what we need right now
