To me this became a real issue long ago - Smallwood is too slow, too cautious, 19 out of 20 of his dead balls are atrocious; he really isn’t captain material and inspires no confidence. It’s the emperor’s clothes - he is on a high wage and used to play at a higher level so surely despite what is in front of our eyes he cannot really be poor and therefore cannot be dropped

 

The problem with smallwood is he’s well in there with the car share crew, on a good wage, and captain. You feel obliged to play him on the money he’s on.

if you drop him for Gillead - who outperformed him last year - will it create unrest with Halliday, Chapman and cook etc?

 

I’m hoping McDonald gets fit and replaces him. His stats might there but he’s the handbrake that’s stops us going on the front foot. He’s just perfect for the Hughes style of play and that’s the reason he’s in the side unfortunately.

 

If we can all see Taylor is crap then so will Hughes. He’s got more experience in football than any of us and I’m sure Hughes will soon bench him or leave him out altogether.

Odusina is the one player in the squad who is used to playing in a back 3. Didn't even make the bench on Saturday. He's stubborn alright.

 

I said this yesterday. Stats tell you what you want to see or hear. Passing stats don’t tell you whether they were going backwards or possession’s stats don’t tell you which half of the field you were in. I haven’t liked Smallwood since last year when it was obvious he was not the player we all thought we were getting. As a captain he is the worst in a city shirt. Attitude problems to add insult to injury.

I totally agree. First thoughts is why Hughes would sign such a player? Appreciate its early days but first impressions are that he’s hardly improved the team, and that’s from us as mere fans.
