Way too many fan bases (not just ours) online are in a panic over spare squad spaces and having loads of cap space left, thinking clubs need to spend if the cash is there. Think people need to remember there is such thing as the January transfer window to correct gaps, with still half the season to play for. No team under a salary cap is going to leave this window spent up with a full squad, just not a smart move given you can still sign out of contract players after the deadline and there is literally a thousand free agents right now.

Also, if you did spend up with no gaps to register, but say your strikers aren't cutting it and you need to look for one in Jan or your main defender is out for 6 months, you are banking on another team wanting your player, or you pay them out which not a lot of clubs will want to do given this whole cap was brought in to protect clubs finances. Would expect most clubs to go into October with 3 or 4 spaces and a healthy chunk of cap space to correct any issues with free agents or waiting until January. As has been said in this thread loads of times with these bigger named free agents, at some stage they will have to drop demands to fit with all L1/2 clubs new structure.

I think it will be more about the character of the individual z-as he is looking to build a squad with "esprit de corps" and does not want to upset it with individuals a like Vaughan/Doyle.

I get your point with regards saving a little for a rainy day but as we know the January transfer window is very much a sellers market, our last few have been very poor maybe a shambles although Abbo would question that comment ;).

You really have a problem with this don’t you to cover all the footballers on there would take loads of scouts and man hours. The app helps to identify players then the homework begins. Yes there are plenty of out of work footballers but it’s getting the right ones that count. As we near the deadline some will take anything

No one comes out of the January market better off if you’re looking to do deals. Clubs know you have a limited time to get a centre forward in for example

Agreed. As some have also pointed out, the season starts in September, not January. As much as it's great to have young kids playing in a tinpot cup, I'm not sure they'd be up for playing til January against seasoned pro's, sometimes two matches a week, weight of expectation etc etc. This is why there's two windows - the first to get players in to compete and play in the first team, the second to top up a squad that may have been hit by a few injuries. I'd question a manager/boardroom who wants to wait until the January window, just in case there's a few bargains to be had.

At least I got Breacker being Phil's number two at Charlton right, Tim/Terry easy mistake to make , I believe I am correct thaf Phil knew little about either Reece or Josh and brought them in on Terry Westleys recommendation, that was more my point

Exactly, PP needed a CB in a hurry and Breacker had seen Burke play, PP took him on a months youth loan to start. Westley wanted a half season loan for Cullen and asked PP if he'd take him.

We could put many arguments down as to why the January window can be very important, more over in the past when you could spend what you liked if the situation required it.
That will be different this coming January I cant see the arguement in leaving a little for a rainy day but it's a big risk IMO for the reasons I gave January is a sellers market.

Two great lads who although they might not achieve the sucsess many of us believed they would they were both great loans to Bradford City.
Hopefully we gave them both an insight into mens football which would have helped their development as young pro footballers.

I think you're broadly right. Its difficult to adjust perceptions on the back of COVID and the introduction of the salary cap; the standard of League 2 last year was poor - it'll likely be worse (or at least a different type of poor) this season, and many sides will feature more younger players. That's inevitable.

Business has been slower than normal in most leagues - other than the handful of clubs with personal backers, no one has done a huge amount of business. Many clubs will be biding their time, seeing how the likelihood for a return of fans into stadiums plays out - and it looks less and less likely that fans will be back in stadiums any time soon. Some players will likely be unrealistic in lowering the normal wage demands, and that agenda will be forced the more we approach the deadline.

So all in all, in normal circumstances I'd be sat here saying we need 5 or 6 more. Realistically we probably need 2. Maybe 3. At least one more striker - with pace, and an attacking player who can play in wide positions and go past players. We only have Ismail who can do that, and his injury record is poor.

His Barnsley scoring record was good though 1 goal every other game, but yeah wouldn't want us to offer any more than a one year deal if interested..

If you're needing to correct about 1/5 of your squad in January then your summer business was severely lacking and you're probably no where near the correct half of the table.

Of course injuries happen but if the squad is built well in the first place then a maximum of 1 or 2 would be enough to freshen it up in a few months time.
