Well it’s likely Hughes will play Oliver as a lone striker next season.
If he does and doesn’t bring in quality wingers to supply chances then it’ll be yet another frustrating season.

Pereira should have been given a chance IMO. He couldn’t have been worse than Eisa’s game at Crewe.

Pereira has been woeful though. All the wide left options have been poor.
If Wright had of stayed the full season I genuinely think we'd have got auto's.
That pace would have made the world of difference.

Fordy, its a bit embarrassing that you can't admit you were wrong on this one.
No one can predict with total certainty how Cook will do in the rest of his career but he has always scored goals and what is undeniable is he has largely carried us this season - you don't have to have the final say on this matter to try and justify your warped viewpoint

Nope, 47 in just over 100 games says he's a great striker at this level.

Everything else is just irrelevant noise.

I said a few months ago that Cook could be turning into a new Thorpe or Windass, hopefully like them his best spell will be in his 30’s. Good to have him signed up.

The season he's had had given him a great hand of cards. Suspect the club would have been wanting a two year deal but when you have a lot of offers in your pocket you can call the shots to some extent. Fans love him and with the right service and formation he'll guarantee you goals.just need some decent wide players and midfielders now.

3 years does seem a long deal at his age, but 30 goal strikers don’t grow on trees. My only hope, is that he respects his body for every year of the 3 just as he has during this last year, and not the overweight version we had during 21/22. He had something to fight for and prove last time.

Is this the same Hughes who signed his replacement at the start of the season the same Hughes who dropped him when he had a dip in form (every striker has them) The same Hughes who didn't bring him any support and made him play a lone furrow up front which Cook hated
I will give him a modicum of credit when he freshens up the whole of the midfield with attacking younger players, players who can provide assists and a 10 goal (at least)striking partner
All a big part of the reason why we failed to get promotion last season
Am not convinced it will happen

How do you know Cook hated his role last season? Scoring 30 goals and then turning down clubs in a higher division to play for us would suggest he is pretty happy with the system.

I agree the midfield needs a revamp and that we need goals from elsewhere, but letting the league's top scorer go on a free does not help us. It's madness that some even think that signing Cook is bad news.

Some posters also seem to massively simplify the scouting/signing process. Finding young players who will score 10+ goals isn't easy. Signing players at this level is always going to be somewhat of a gamble, be it young loanees from higher division clubs, or non league prospects. There is no guarantee.

We narrowly missed out on promotion last year. The margin between us and the promoted teams (except Orient) was narrow. We've now managed to retain out top scorer. If we can add some more energy and experience to the central midfield, wingers who can chip in with goals, and a backup to Cook, then we will be very competitive.

From my files. Here's the top of the all-time League goals list as it stood before this season. Cook was on 20, so now he's at 48 and slots in at 18th most League goals (in 89 starts + 17 subs).

    upload_2023-5-30_9-13-13.png

With now 51 total career goals, Cook slots into 17th place, after Abbott with 52 and before Dolan with 49, but Abbott did it in 311+32 appearances and Dolan in 212+5. Cook is at 95+20 total appearances.

I'm sure after the season he's had there will be plenty of interest and I wouldn't blame him if he leaves for one final big pay off, not sure how we can replace him the way Hughes sets up, he's had a fantastic season carrying our play off hopes almost single handedly, if he goes I'll wish him all the best him and Lewis have been the only 2 pluses from a pretty ordinary season, Gent and Hughes have a massive task to get a striker to who can get anywhere near what Cook has achieved for us this season.

Good luck to him wherever he goes he deserves it
Hope he ends up with a manager who knows how to get the best from him
Had we given him the service his goal tally would have been even better
Any other L2 L1 or championship club would have welcomed that

If Hartlepool had have stayed up he might well have gone there, he still might.
Anyone thinking Cook is a top end league 1 striker though needs to give their head a shake.

No disagreement RT. The circumstances that led to our left side “conundrum”, which as it turned out started at game 1 of the season and other than Wright , lasted the entire season. Something that we could never bargain for. Chapmans injury, just when he started to show the form required of the position, WAS the last straw that broke the camels back.

Orient, Crewe, Swindon, Carlisle, twice didn’t have to “exploit” it, it was bloody obvious that we had no outlet. Ridehalgh’s crossing was poor yesterday, as it has been most of the season, so any team just put their normal right sided “ defensive “ players into midfield, knowing the grass , wasn’t covered on our left. No wonder we were heavily pressed in the middle of the park.! As a result our “diamond” was nullified, our “three” in the middle was nullified and to some extent Walker was nullified.

I can’t blame Hughes for that if we don’t have a player capable of playing the “Wright” position . He was left with tinkering with alternatives , which didn’t work..

The loss of Wright, turned out to be a HUGE , HUGH blow. The opponent knew it, and so do we. The two games in the play offs laid it all out for everyone to see.

There's already an A N Other Frontman in the building. He goes by the name Vadaine Oliver and he still has 2 years left on his original 3 year contract ;)

Contrary to my previous post about PP and Wrexham, you could have a valid point there Mickey. Travel to Apperley Bridge and VP when sharing with others on cost might be an attraction with some improvement on terms.
I know from talking to PP he stays over in Wrexham several times a week depending on fixtures and Cook would have to do the same, all extra cost. If he’s turned Stevenage down ten Wrexham will fall into the same category. Hope Ryan is working hard on retention

Cook has scored a lot of goals all his career he is not a one hit wonder, he can look a pub player at times but that's just his style, a rough diamond that runs like a bit of a cabbage, I do think we should push the boat out for him but only as a very good L2 player, with very good L2 player wages. No player is worth blowing the budget out of the water for, especially one that probably won't have a resale value.

He was the best striker in the whole division so who are you touting that is better than him in league 2 and why?
