Two non-scoring players, transfer list the pair.

The biggest issue we have is not having an out ball. In all the time Cook has been here, he’s never been the forward to hold the ball up and bring others into play. 35 yards, back to goal is not getting the best out of Cook but if we persist with the current set up, his goals will dry up. Get Banks, Angol and Wright in behind and we might see the best of Cook.

The point remains who in there right mind would drop their leading scorer as AngryGaz is suggesting.

Well I wouldn't, but I was just trying to be fair to Hoskins, who is on red hot form, especially for a winger.

I didn't go to the Stockport game, but comparing Hoskins to Cook just makes no sense. Saying he's not been scoring also makes no sense.

It's a call that only MH can make.

I don't know how he will make the decision, but he has to.

I'm not convinced MH knows his best 11 yet.

But I think we are at a "tipping point" and if MH gets it right, happy days.

If he doesn't we are in the khazi league for yet another year.

so just say this goes on for 5 more games do you still keep him in because he’s our top scorer ?????
Well according to your logic he should play every game until someone scores more goals than him :) and here’s me thinking we had other strikers on the books

Look through Andy Cooks entire career, he is a patch striker. He'll score in 5 of 8 games, the wont score for 6. Last season in a crap team he got 4 goals in his first 4, then didn't score for 5 games. Followed that with 3 in 6 before his injury. Came back from injury and scored 3 in 7, then finished the season with 2 in his last 18 games.

You've just got to hope when he is on good form, he bags goals like he has been because it will dry up at some point. Last season, we just kept starting him as the alternatives were largely Robinson & Lavery. We actually have options now, and Hughes has been a tinkerer through his entire career, so Cook might not get the rope he had with other managers.

Don't think it's the time to drop him yet but if he hasn't scored by maybe the time we get to November, I could certainly see Hughes giving him a bench spot for a while.

And that patchy striking rate is evident this season in the league. So far, he's scored 9 goals (Inc 1 pen) in 12 league games which overall is a good return in my book. But of the 12 games we've played, he has failed to score from open play in 7 of them; that's more games than he's scored in. His tally of 9 in 12 games is reinforced by him having scored 2 goals in each of 3 games. I can understand how Hughes regards him as a confidence player. When his confidence is high, he's capable of scoring more than 1. When he's low in confidence such as when the defenders are giving him little room, he struggles to make an impact.

He certainly currently deserves to be selected as a starter. But we have other strikers on the books who deserve their opportunities to show what they can deliver. That's a difficult call for Hughes but one where sentiment has to be ignored.

Nail on the head there Bronco.
We don't have a fox in the box.
Nearest to that description is Harratt and he's not getting any chances at the moment.
Strange because he was exactly what we needed on Saturday when going long.
Even if we had won the flick on's there was no one there to nip in behind the defence to take an opportunity.

To be fair to Cook, most strikers in football have records like that. It's not an anomaly for a striker to go a period of games without scoring then hit a spell of a goal a game.

No problem I didn't check to see if he'd figured in those games, I don't understand why anyone would criticise what Cook has done so far, and lets not forget when we got him on loan from Mansfield he finished leading score and achieved it again last season.

You wanted him dropping now because Cooks only score 1 goal in 3 games that's what this whole debate is about, once again moving the goal posts to validate you opinion.

Dont get me wrong, not having a go at Cook, i don't know how anyone can this season. However, just pointing out his entire career record. It's the same at every club with every manager he's had, if he's a lone striker or in a 2.

It's more a question of is he going to get the time to recover if that 6 or 7 game spell comes in? Lower league strikers with those records like Cook usually keep their starting place, or maybe miss out once or twice then start again. But he now is under a manger who throughout his whole managerial career has rotated his strikers very often.

Exactly and Cook will have his periods of not scoring but not sure now is the time to drop him.
We're at Salford Saturday who are having a good start to the season would you drop your leading scorer for this game , lose on Saturday and this forum will be full of doom and gloom.
Who ever gets the striker role will be judged on Cooks scoring record this season they have to make an instant impact, it would be a brave managed who drops his leading scorer and says we will have to give his replacement time to adapt, I wonder if Haalands goal returns were 1 in 3 Pep would leave him out.

Hughes may choose to go a different style although I doubt it as nearly every manager sticks to his preferred method of formation. He only changed on Saturday because he knew it wasn't working. I think he's more inclined to work on the players getting his plan A right on the training pitch rather than look at a plan B. His problem will come if other teams press us from om the off, doing that exposed the lack of technical ability in what are essentially league 2 footballers. Passing out from your own line takes a very high level of skill from the whole team, I think Hughes will have them go more direct when needed.

The problem on Saturday was clear to see, and the fault lies with Hughes for not rectifying it. Stockport played a 4222 system packing the middle and leaving the wings free, but we didnt use them. Their RB was ripe to be put on his arse by Wright and we created absolutely nothing at all down our right/ their left.

Had he gone a proper 442 instead of just what he did which was more of a 4132/ 41212 then we could have exploited that space and pushed them into changing shape.

Someone needs to tell Hughes you wont get out of this league with nice tippy tappy football. We need to mix it up and go long at times. Angol did bugger all when he came on, and Cook was having a poor game. Pushing Chapman wide, possibly bringing East on for Smallwood who was slowing the game down, and going with two battering rams of Oliver & Harratt up front would have changed the game.
