I think the speculation of electoral fraud is several orders of magnitude greater than the reality of the situation. There’s never usually any concrete evidence to substantiate the grandiose claims (and hey, guess what, there isn’t now either! Turns out if you tell your side’s voters to vote in person, it’s a really bad idea!)

It is hard, and not particularly efficient to stuff/nullify ballots to any meaningful extent. Electoral injustice is fought pseudo-legally way before Election Day and usually takes the shape of bending spending limits or voter suppression.

 

Why should anyone’s voice count more than anybody else’s? Why shouldn’t the greater mass of people have a bigger say? Land doesn’t vote, people do.

I agree, do away with the electoral college, and do it by popular vote. But I think what you’re really asking for is better devolved local government.

 

That there is electoral fraud especially with postal ballots is without doubt a fact, It happens in every election, The question is how big it is and does it effect the result, In most cases it never gets near changing the result.
What is more worrying if at all true is that the count was not independently monitored and monitors were refused access to watch and verify the count as this is where most mistakes are made in tight counts, One pile of voting papers on the wrong stack could change a result.

 

Is there any evidence of electoral offences that have affected more than one or two votes? I think in 2019 the only conviction of an electoral offence was from somebody holding on to the ballot box to stop somebody putting votes into it.

There is almost no point doing it. There are a handful of high profile incidences of it in the UK (looking at Lutfur Rahman and his fraudulent Tower Hamlets campaign), but these are few and far between. It would be extraordinary and hugely damaging for a major political party to be caught doing it. The idea of mass and widespread electoral fraud is more a figment of most people’s over-active imagination to scramble to rationalise something that doesn’t make sense to them.

Yep, I’ll include the Remain campaign in that, too.

 

US politics is generally dripping with dishonesty but Trump has taken it to a new level. The longer he keeps up this charade the longer it will take the Republicans to recover over the long term. A bit like unelectable Labour in our country.

 

For as poor as some are saying he's been it looks a closer election result than ours, I'd say any government that had to go back to the country during this pandemic is on a loser.
