Its like having a choice of meals, all of which make you fell sick but are then duty bound to eat the one that makes you feel less sick. How about putting some meals on the table that are worth eating. Half the US whooping in delight voting for a candidate that probably wouldn't have won had his opponent been anyone but Trump speaks volumes of where politics currently sits in America.

 

One thing that does concern me with the US election is that the networks call the result even before the counts are complete and finished, They then expect the loser to concede on their say so and lambast the loser if he dare ask for the final official result before conceding, There should also be a complete ban on opinion polls a week before the elections as some US media outlets had some very misleading ones right up to the day of the election,

 

Sure. The fact that he isn't a career politician appeals to many Americans, especially in the south and Midwest, for whom suspicion of Washington government is deeply ingrained. His bullying and boorish behaviour appeals to those who like a 'strong leader'. Religious zealots like his recently adopted anti- abortion policy and his packing the Supreme Court with right wing judges. Many white folks see demographic changes eroding their dominance and see Trump's racial discrimination as defence of their culture. Then there's the gun lobby and the anti-taxation, anti universal healthcare types. So, yes, there are many people who like him. But 5m more voted against him.
The majority of Americans live in urban areas on the coasts and the in the north. The Republicans now primarily represent the rural south and Midwest - a much lower population. They are a minority party who've lost the popular vote in 6 of the last 7 elections. They should be nowhere near government but have cynically manipulated the system, using gerrymandering, suppression of voter registration and the blatantly unfair electoral college to cling to power. What's happened in Georgia shows what happens when a well organised campaign of voter registration maximises the BME vote. Let's hope that the Democrats can win the two run-offs in Georgia so that Biden isn't hamstrung from the start by an obstructive Republican controlled Senate. Biden needs to be able to enact legislation to tackle the pandemic and undo some of the damage Trump has caused.

 

Yes, incredible stuff. It would appear that there are no depths beyond which he is prepared to stoop to hang on to power. And no conspiracy theory too bonkers for him to peddle.
He currently seems to be totally consumed by a feeling of injustice, however delusional. His whole life has been one of privilege. He has always found dubious ways of being bailed out of any losses, business-wise, to avoid his great psychological fear of being branded a 'loser'. He is so convinced of his own greatness that he simply cannot believe that the American public would vote him out and he cannot process or accept it. The way things are going they may have to get the army or police to drag him out of the White House once Biden is inaugurated!

 

I wouldn't. It would just inflame the white supremacist thugs, with guns, who worship him, and lead to violence on the streets. And add to the ridiculous conspiracy theories peddled by the right wing in the US.

I would, however, love to see him dragged off to prison in two or three years time, along with others of his family, having been convicted of multiple tax fraud by the NY courts.

 

That phone call is grounds for a quick impeachment if he refuses to go

 

At last a bit of good political news. Looks like the Democrats have won both Georgia run-off seats so will hold the balance of power in the Senate with Elizabeth Warren's casting vote. So that arsehole McConnell won't be able to block everything Biden tries to do for the next four years.

 

There are actually Americans that believe anything Trump says.

To your second point, I’ve often said - and it’s never been more true than today - that if they didn’t speak English in the US, we’d collectively see them as just as dysfunctional as we see the likes of Russia or China.

 

Apparently the Capitol rioters were really Antifa activists dressed up as MAGA types in order to make Trump and his supporters look bad.
