I liked him when he was younger if he still has it then this is a very good signing

 

Doncaster don't want him in the same way Carlisle didn't want Nahki Wells & Rochdale didn't want Gary Jones. I'll judge him when I see him, but first impressions are far from MEH. Lots of experience higher up, and a leader.

 

Are people missing the fact that this isn’t the type of midfielder we needed? I’m confused.
We don’t have any creativity in the middle so we’ve just signed a player who doesn’t contribute goals or assists and is judging by Donny fans comments is very slow. We already play too slowly imo so this just doesn’t fix the problem.

 

Happy with this one, once again time will tell. I expect Clayton, Bola , Neevers and Costello to play Saturday?

Strangely I wonder if we might see Oliver dropped and Neevers leading the line? I have seen stranger things happen?

 

Could have done with him 5 or 6 years ago, all now depends on his fitness, won't recognise half the team on saturday if all the new signings turn up .....

Exactly this. Horses for courses. Doncaster might not need that kind of player but we need some bite in our midfield and if Clayton has been brought in to provide that then it could be really good fit.

Totally disagree. We have plenty of forward thinking creative squad members. Getting the ball to them quickly and allowing them to operate effectively in the right parts of the pitch is often our issue (IMO). We also miss leadership.

Clayton, on paper, answers the above. A decent signing for me…..

 

Think my views changed on player acquisition lately. Sign proven experienced players in L2, a much bigger gamble trying to develop younger players when you're trying to get promoted. Get up to L1 then let other clubs develop them for you.

Not necessarily. Clayton and Smallwood in the same team could be the slowest midfield in the league. If he is going to play 3 in there, who would compliment them better, Sutton or Gilly?

 

He is exactly the type of player we need. Someone who can win a tackle and break thinks up, someone with drive. We have all the creativity in the world in (alledgedly) Pieira, Champan, Gillieaid, Banks, Nevers etc. We needed a leader, a battler, a ball winner. His speed isn't an issue if he gets the ball and gives it to them.

If he replaces Gilliead then I see us going back to 4231

To be fair, Boxing day was only 3 weeks ago and there has been a cup weekend in there.

 

Doncaster fans thought Bremner was a good manager and Ian Snodin the new Messiah. I wouldn't take their word as Gospel. (see what I did there)

Where are the good signing views coming from? We’ve taken a player a team 12th in our division don’t want and the overall comments are that his legs have gone. Like completely gone.

 

Totally agree. Loads of shouts for a box-to-box midfielder but this might not be on MH's shopping list.
We need someone who can break up opposition attacks, distribute the ball to the right areas and let those with the legs do the running. Plus Smallwood isn't delivering the leader role we all hoped he would. Clayton could offer more than just his football ability with some much needed leadership out there
