Same here. The Health Secretary has tested positive now, and is double jabbed. The fact he's jabbed will mean he's less likely to suffer serious symptoms.

The reduction of transmission is always quoted as a percentage which makes it appear high, in reality it only reduces transmission slightly.

Further to my previous posts on this topic, here's a piece from today that summarises the current state of play: how the current vaccines are helping prevent infection and transmission, how the real problem areas now are the under- and un-vaccinated people and places. It also gives an indication of the difficulties that arise when trying to work out just how well transmission is being hindered. Some of the articles it links to are the same as the links I've provided in previous posts.

Edited to add that I rather like the image of a vaccine being an army ready to repel invaders rather than being an impenetrable shield.

The current state of play in the US and Canada you mean?

I believe in terms positive cases in England the figures are around 50/50 vaccinated and unvaccinated, which as you say, illustrates that it's not a protective shield.

The majority in ICU and deaths over the pond appear to be the unvaccinated, which shows getting the vaccine is actually about protecting yourself and not this self-righteous BS about doing it for society. If you feel that you need protection from the virus, get the vaccine, the unvaccinated are no threat to you then.

No, it remains about both. Agreed you primarily protect yourself. But by doing so, you do protect society: first by reducing the chances of transmitting the virus should you catch it, and second by greatly reducing the chances that, should you catch the virus, you will end up hospitalised or dead, for a few weeks tying up - either way - medical resources that could be used elsewhere. That, arguably, is how the unvaccinated can most be a threat, even to the vaccinated.

That's a good point I never really thought about regarding the medical resources. You'd hope those who are most at risk of hospitalisation would be vaccinated though.

Not necessarily down to the vaccine though. When I had it (before vaccines were available) I got a persistent cough and my hips and knees ached a bit, nothing major at all. My mate got it a month later and couldn't get out of bed for 3 days.

You're right, different people react in completely different ways to the virus. Any comparisons need to be made across large numbers of people, and even then it's not easy to eliminate other factors that can skew the results.

Plus, of course, the virus that we are exposed to changes (the variant balance is almost continuously shifting) and other factors (such as amount of exposure, e.g. due to restrictions in place) need to be factored in. So, for example, a study conducted 3 months ago may have limited validity today.

The hospital my daughter works in were down to practically zero covid patients a few months back. They now have a significant number and at least one in ITU when she finished her last shift on Friday. She is having to cover extra shifts due to the number of doctors ill or isolating. On Friday they had no beds and were described as "in crisis". However this isn't down to the current covid influx. She believes the increase in patient numbers they are now seeing is due mainly to people presenting with other illnesses with exacerbated symptoms due to the delays in attending GP surgeries or A&E during the pandemic.

Don't worry if you get "pinged"
Carry on as normal and claim you are taking part in a "covid testing pilot scheme"
They really are taking the p1ss now

No coverage on mainstream media, as usual, but the french people are speaking and acting out against forced vaccination and covid passports. Good for them.
