    First fecking time I expose myself and my lad to an indoor crowd without masks and I catch this shite. An expensive lesson to learn for a self employed guy.

    Sorry to hear that. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much, the mask may not have made much difference. My daughter works in a pub, , wears a mask religiously and still caught it.

    Hope you're both OK and recover quickly.

    I shouldnt have put my lad in that position, it was irresponsible. Sounds strange but what's really pissed me off is my lad had 100% attendance record all the way to 6th form and has missed his first day's off school. With the complete lack of any strategy this government has had through this pandemic I'm pretty sure we'll be in lockdown again.

    A fabric mask is nothing more than a comfort blanket.

    A ffp3 or N95 mask do give protection but seeing as most masks being worn are the cheap fabric kind he is right. They are a waste of time.

    Parachutes work, but if I made one out of fishing net it wouldn't work. The same principle applies here.

    A slight exaggeration, as even the cheap fabric masks provide some very limited protection but, yes, if you are wearing a mask to protect yourself, then it should be at least a FFP2/N95/KN95 standard and, as you mention, FFP3 which provides even greater protection.

    And if you are going to fork out for FFP3 masks, then go for the unvalved version if you want to protect others, as well as yourself, as the valved versions are excellent at protecting the wearer, but not much good at protecting others.

    Masks would help if every single one being used was a ffp3 or N95 level mask, but as they aren't it becomes meaningless.

    By allowing anything covering the mouth to count as a mask is on par with any tyre to pass an MOT regardless of it having no tread and being bald to the canvas, then claiming they would do anything to help traction on the road.

    If you were to carry water from a well to your home would you use a bucket (n95 mask) or a sieve (fabric mask) the sieve kind of works as you will have some water left.

    The evidence is everywhere. There are multiple tests, studies, experiments etc. That prove that cloth masks are pretty much useless.

    I've been using FFP3 masks for around 20 years. During the pandemic I've also been using FFP2/N95 masks; I've also been using a reusable Swiss 'fabric' mask made using HeiQ Viroblock technology, which has performed exceptionally well in tests, with similar results to FFP2/N95 masks.

    Of course, it's not just the masks themselves, the levels of protection depend on them being used correctly as well.

    Isn't HeiQ more of an antiviral coating though, preventing the build up of the virus on the fabric itself rather than blocking the virus from going through the fabric?
