One caveat, the dominant variant in June in Canada was the B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant. In another week or two it is likely that it will be overtaken by the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, which is likely to increase that headline percentage.

I would never of dreamt of doing this but some of the beliefs being expressed on here have driven me to it.

I am a registered and practicing healthcare professional in in the NHS. Alongside my clinical qualifications I have a post-graduate degree in health research (epidemiology).

I can categorically reassure everyone on here that Covid-19 exists, it is a mass killer, and is a major threat to the normal functioning of all the NHS. The main DEFENCE against COVID death and ill health is VACCINATION. Stats also strongly indicate that being VACCINATED is the best DEFENCE against TRANSMISSION.

I have mixed views on the Government policy and lockdown easing at the current pace, but without continued up-take of VACCINATION and a sensible return to social life/ distancing, I predict we will all be back to watching City on I-follow before the nights draw in.

A question for those who know more about Viruses than me. Do they always mutate into something worse, or can they dilute over time and get weaker as well? Every variant seems to be always worse, or is it that those that get weaker don’t make the headlines?

They can mutate in either direction. Usually, it will be the more transmissable ones that dominate, but they could be less or more virulent.

As someone who was quite heavily involved in equipping the nightingale hospitals it was always said we haven't the qualified staff to run them think back to when vaccines 1st became available Drs and Nurses were coming out of retirement to administer them how they thought we had enough staff to run the nightingales is a mystery and was questioned at the time
I dare not think how much money was wasted when a good amount of the equipment was made redundant, put them in the same category as track and trace
A divided community is easier to control hence the reasons we don't hear what % of ICU patients have been vaccinated and what % haven't it's the best way to divide a community one half thinking the other half is trying to kill them
But you me and a growing number of others are considered conspiracy nut jobs for not endorsing the rudderless government line

True; there hasn't been -- at least, not that I can find -- a more recent article on that theme. However, no shortage of material from America about what is happening to under- and un-vaccinated places and populations. CNN.com has had some informative articles. I tried to see what the CDC's website had to say on this issue, and only found myself confused! They could explain their presentations a bit better. There is some relevant material in this article:

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/two-dose-covid19-vaccine-protection-delta-variant-1.6094900

The Indian variant has been around for quite a while here, though agreed it wasn't the overwhelmingly dominant variant it has since become. But despite the rise of this variant, cases and hospitalisations here have continued to drop very satisfactorily, and comments in various articles do confirm that the vaccines are so far working well against all the variants.

Well said. Sometimes I think the internet is turning minds to mush. What if everyone had some of the attitudes your hear to the smallpox vaccine, polio vaccine, etc you shudder to think how different the world would be.

The travel policy of the government once again is not fit for purpose as the goalposts move once again.

Quick question. If a British citizen has had their vaccines abroad do they still need to quarantine when returning from an Amber country from Monday?

I don't think even the government know at this stage. Announce quarantine for people returning from France mid evening on a Friday for a Monday Return pretty much sums up the mess.

I think -- sometimes;) -- that you have the wrong tense with "is turning"! People's BS detectors seem to have stopped working; a healthy skepticism has turned into an unhealthy disbelief in the established and an equally unhealthy readiness to believe anything provided it is unbelievable (e.g. the followers of Trump, the Covid-deniers, the anti-vaccination crowd and so on...).

As for 'vaccine passports,' I think what the government here (Ontario) did is suitable. We got a printed receipt after each shot, giving sufficient details to identify ourselves to an official's satisfaction, a note whether this was the first or second shot, details of the shot itself, and which authorised organisation gave the shot. The Ministry of Health also has this information; indeed it sends everyone, automatically by e-mail, copies of these receipts, and should you lose yours you can request a replacement. Have a copy of this receipt with you, along with the usual cards you carry (driver's licence, health card), and if needed you can easily prove your vaccination status.

Here in UAE we have been using a Covid passport system for a while and it works well. It’s via an app with a QR code. You scan it at venues that require it. Depending on your vaccine Status or tested status, the app will either be green, red or neutral.

Apparently we live in a democratic country with freedom of choice, that freedom should also be to have or not have the vaccine. I had my first jab a week or so back mistakenly thinking it would help my parents
A great point regarding the phrase protect the NHS, isn't that what the vaccine is supposed to do?
As for mask wearing, I'll give my own experience. Always worn one when in closed public spaces where crowds are prevalent until last Sunday for the football, pub environment no control no masks including me and my lad. Can't be coincidence my and the lad are now house bound and going for a pcr test this morning. I'm annoyed with myself because it's the first time I've not worn one.
